Windows Phone 8 queries from an Android user

Hi there.

I am currently studying the possibility of getting a Windows Phone 8 smartphone. As someone who owned Android phones for 4 years my criteria (and standards) for getting a phone are build quality, camera quality, battery life, customizations, multitasking, music and audio quality & performance. These issues are important to me especially in my present age/job/needs/likes.

I would like to ask about:

1. Photos - Now i heard photos are stored in the Albums folder is that correct? Is there a basic editing tool from Windows Phone 8 (WP8)? Can i share my photos to Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Email, Dropbox, Evernote, etc. or do i still have to go to the app then look/upload the photo like what iOS is about?

2. Camera - Is there a quick camera icon toggle thingy in the lock screen (similar to iOS7.1 & Android 4.4.2) where i just swipe up to quickly lunch the camera? How fast does the camera load up? I have heard about the Nokia Pro Camera with it's pseudo burst mode option but does WP8 has that very quick shutter button with zero lag when taking shots much like the iPhone 5 & Galaxy S3?

3. Keyboard - Can i install 3rd-party keyboard apps in place or on top of what the standard WP8 keyboard is? Are there emoji icons built-in to the standard WP8 keyboard? Is there a 1st-party or third-party app wherein you can swipe or slide your fingers on the keyboard for an even faster typing?

4. Customizations - Are there any customizations options of the lock screen and home screen where i choose what wallpaper i can put in there?

5. Live Tiles - Live tiles are very unique to the OS. But i fear its a battery & resource hog. Can i stop it from moving to save battery?

6. Running apps & Multitasking - Now i heard about pressing the back button to bring up the last 8 apps (or tasks) that you did. Do i press the "X" button of each app or do i swipe up or down to cancel/stop it?

7. Notifications - I like to have that option to swipe down from the top of the screen and see all my notifications, click them to go to that notifications or swiping the notification left or right to disregard it. Now, i have seen and read that WP8 has notifications but not like iOS or Android. Is it better? or just different?

8. Quick Settings - I would also like quick settings toggle built-in to the Notifications Centre (like Android) to toggle on or off things such as wifi, bluetooth, etc. Does WP8 has this setting? Or is there an app for that?

9. Updates - The one that annoys me with Android is the fragmentation. Google releases the Android OS, forwards them to OEMs (for skinning & putting bloatwares) thus resulting to issues such as poor performance, battery life eventually phones receiving late updates. How confident can i be certain updates for WP8 will be timely, early or more often than `Android or iOS?

10. Documents - I have a PC. So when i edit and save a document in Office on my Windows Phone can i access them on my PC as well?

11. Transferring files - Now i'm aware the easiest way to do this is via wires and thru this Windows Phone app that i download is that correct? I also understand that its easy as drag n' drop BUT where exactly (i.e. which folder) of the phone do i drag the files to?

12. Battery life - Very important to me. I can to to GSMarena and see how they rate each phone's battery life but like audio usage is very subjective & dependent on each user. As WP8 is a closed platform how confident should i be in terms of battery life? Is there a battery saving option on all WP8 phones?

Please advice. Thanks.

Welcome to Windows Eight Forums, gino76ph.

I just came from a Droid X2 and bought a Nokia Lumia 1520 just before the new year. I would like to answer your questions, so please bear with me while I get to my PC to do so. It will take a bit to answer all of them.

1. I store my photos in a folder on the MicroSD card. I never share my photos, so the rest I cannot answer.

2. There is a camera icon on the desktop and the camera is instantly available. The other day I saw a W2P with a 28MP camera, but I don't remember the model. One nice feature is that you can take panorama pictures which are stitched together.

3. No idea. For extensive typing I use my BT keyboard.

4. You can customize the start screen. Wallpapers are supposed to come in the next 4 weeks with the 8.1 update.

5. Yes, but battery life was never an issue for me.

6. Not sure. I stop each app individually. HG would know better.

7. & 8. I defer to HG

9. Updates seem to be timely. But some will come from Nokia also.

10. Yes, there is an Office package on the W8P which works perfectly - if you don't tweak the files like I have done with some PowerPoint audio files, LOL - they must be .wav not MP3 with a WAV header like mine.

11. I keep all my user files on the SD card and have set the OS to store them there. And the SD card is accessable like and card, stick or disk. It is just a big folder with subfolders. I prefer the cable. The best file manager for the phone I have found is the Pocket File Manager - similar to the ES File Manager.

12. My battery seems to last forever. Since I got it on March 1, I have charged it 3 times - that goes pretty fast. My Android tablet takes a lot longer. Power saving is as usual - most of the power goes into the screen. If you dimm that, you save. I unfortunately cannot do that because I have only 40% eyesight.

I am a new user (since March 1) and had no trouble getting used to it. HG and the other guys helped me a lot to get started. When I got my Android tablet, the runway was a lot longer. I have no phone contract and use only VoIP. I use it as a gadget because I really need no phone. But it is a lot of fun. I have a high class Sony headset that folds up into a tiny box the size of a donut. That is my way of listening to audio output. You cannot expect too much from the tiny speaker.

Just to let you know off the bat that I’m not on any social sites nor have accounts, so I’ll be limited in answering you questions that way. WP8 is very similar to Windows 8/8.1 except it’s a little more limited. You may also want to know that WP8 will be upgraded to 8.1 within months and there’s a whole lot more to come. Links will be on the last pages of that thread I just posted.

Yes, Albums configed to my Micro SD. Since mine is a Nokia, there is a basic editor to crop, rotate, and auto fix. There is also the Nokia Creative Studio app also. I see there’s a ton in the store that can be added.

There is sharing from an album just as there is in the W8/8.1 Charms bar, which one can share via email, FaceBook, Twitter, or whatever else is being added nowadays. It can also be shared via text.

This is an absolutely great camera in Nokias. Takes great pics in low light.

It can be configured to open quickly while locked from the physical camera button. I don’t have the Nokia Camera Pro, so not qualified to answer that. If it’s on auto focus, then the usual shutter time, if not it’s quick.

Yes, you can get other keyboards, but the standard is great with emoticons. I don’t think there’s a slide or swipe typing as in Android. One may be able to get one via the Store.

4. Customizations - Are there any customizations options of the lock screen and home screen where i choose what wallpaper i can put in there?

Lock screen only. I have mine set to Bing Weather. Bing pic of the day is another. Use pics or various other wallpapers. The home screen has color themes one can choose.

5. Live Tiles - Live tiles are very unique to the OS. But i fear its a battery & resource hog. Can i stop it from moving to save battery?

No stop on live tiles. One is not on a home screen long enough to consider that a problem.

6. Running apps & Multitasking - Now i heard about pressing the back button to bring up the last 8 apps (or tasks) that you did. Do i press the "X" button of each app or do i swipe up or down to cancel/stop it?

Hold back button 1 second for what are called tabs much like IE Modern.. Press again to cancel back to last screen. Scroll right to select tab screen hit it to bring forward or X to close.

7. Notifications - I like to have that option to swipe down from the top of the screen and see all my notifications, click them to go to that notifications or swiping the notification left or right to disregard it. Now, i have seen and read that WP8 has notifications but not like iOS or Android. Is it better? or just different?

My phone has what is called peek. Palm on screen shows time. Double tap on screen shows lock screen with time, date, calendar notifications, cellular info, WiFi & Bluetooth on/off, and battery. Since I have lock screen set to Bing Weather it shows present temp and high/low temps.

8. Quick Settings - I would also like quick settings toggle built-in to the Notifications Centre (like Android) to toggle on or off things such as wifi, bluetooth, etc. Does WP8 has this setting? Or is there an app for that?

No toggle that I know of. Everything via settings.

Unfortunately they are all carrier dependent and I’m not partial to any of them. They all update with same frequency.

10. Documents - I have a PC. So when i edit and save a document in Office on my Windows Phone can i access them on my PC as well?

Yes via OneDrive or other cloud service. I stick with MS services. Simple. OneNote is great. Use it frequently.

11. Transferring files - Now i'm aware the easiest way to do this is via wires and thru this Windows Phone app that i download is that correct? I also understand that its easy as drag n' drop BUT where exactly (i.e. which folder) of the phone do i drag the files to?

The app will install automatically as soon as you USB the phone. You can use the app or File Explorer. It is limited with no file manager on the phone, but there are file manager apps.

12. Battery life - Very important to me. I can to to GSMarena and see how they rate each phone's battery life but like audio usage is very subjective & dependent on each user. As WP8 is a closed platform how confident should i be in terms of battery life? Is there a battery saving option on all WP8 phones?

I have the Lumia 1020, so my battery is bigger. Just as any other device it does depend on the user, the battery type, manufacturer, etc. There is a battery saver on this phone. I’m a medium phone user, so I don’t have battery problems.[/QUOTE]

All in all, the biggest item is that it all works in conjunction with my 8.1 PC. This has simplified my life. I wouldn't even consider anything else.

There is so much more to reveal, but I'm tired of thinking and typing right now. Try this: The Smartphone Reinvented Around You | Windows Phone (United States)

Thank you WHS & HG. (there should be a "like" button in here to like or to thank you for your reply)

OK.

But...What if the phone has no microSD card? Everything will be on the phone itself. The one i'm planning on buying is the Lumia 925.

How can i set my lock screen wallpaper to Bing weather or pic of the day?

is there a unified or "all-in-one" app to look at all your social network's notifications?

How about an app to toggle On or Off your basic settings like wifi, bluetooth, GPS, etc.?

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure Nokias all come with microSD slots. Cell Phones and Smartphones - Nokia - USA

Settings (tile) > Lock screen (just like 8/8.1)

Yes, there are unified social apps and I have an app tile from "Settings Plus" in which those items are quickly accessed. Overview | Windows Phone Apps+Games Store (United States)

I would advise you to visit a MS or carrier store to try the shoes on. As a young person, I think you'll be happier with the phaplet-size phone.

Thanks HG. For some reason the thumbs up button is not working on here. I just "ticked" your reply on the lower right corner.

The Nokia Lumia phones here in the UK have all onboard storage and no microSD card slot which is no big deal but could be helpful in many ways.

I'm quite happy with a 4.5"-4.8" size phone. The one i really want is the Lumia 930 but it ain't available yet.

Problem with Carphone Warehouse and other shops here the Windows phones they have are either not to the latest software or on demo mode so i cannot fully enjoy and use them. I decide on what i read, advices given or Youtube videos.

It may be that you haven't gotten the privilege of giving reps since you're a new member. Thank you anyway. :)

No sd card? Is that by law or something else?

I bought the phablet because I don't want to carry a phone and another larger device such as a convertible. This fits my needs perfectly.

Nokia is a European company. One would think you would see more than we in the US. Go figure, eh?

I think its not about law or some legislation. I suppose even though the UK is in Europe it still depends on what Nokia "dictates" and proposes to each EU country. Much like what Samsung is doing releasing varying versions of their Galaxy S phones in North America, Europe & South Korea/Asia.

I am also an Android user for many years now and I am also thinking of jumping to a Windows based phone maybe the new Nokia 930 when it comes on sale in the UK.
So maybe you should do the same and wait see what a the new Nokia 930 is like.

I could wait but i could also try and get the 925 if Windows Phone for me. Then i'll get the 930.

I have the iPhone 5C and as much as its a good phone the screen is just too small for me. And the restrictiveness & closeness of the OS makes me frustrated at times. Theni found Android and i fell in love with the OS. It was at first slow in updates then more and more features came out that i liked like openly bluetooth fire sharing, Swype keyboard, bigger screen than iPhone, massive customisations options, files support (e.g. Flac unlike iOS), gestures, multitasking, etc.

Then i saw the rise of Windows Phone which i saw as a sort of hybrid of Android & iOS. What attracted me was the seemingly excellent build quality, an optimised OS (leading to smooth OS performance and above average battery life) because of a closed environment and less fragmentation issues.

Ok, I see. You and other countries fortunately have unlocked phones, whereas here they are carrier locked, which should be outlawed here. Carrier muscle here will probably never let that happen.

On the other hand, exclusive agreements between OEMs/manufacturers and carriers is probably why we have more choice here.

All in all, what a racket, eh?!!

I think all these OEMs & Manufacturers all have their "sweetheart" countries where (basing on demographies, demand, legislation, network, etc.) if they release their phones they know the phones will be a hit amongst the populus. We in the UK are lucky as the top 2 high-street shops that sell phones are mostly unlocked phones. Of course you can easily have it unlocked elsewhere if you want to.

Another question spring to mind is cloud storage. We all know about OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox et al but since i'm buying my very first Windows Phone 8 i can see the hardware is nothing compare to the quad-core behemoths of Android. So my fear is if i'm backing-up 100 photos of .jpg resolution (taken from a "standard" 8MP camera in 4:3 ratio) would that Windows Phone struggle in uploading those files?

For clarification - I just looked up the specs of the 925 - it does not seem to have a MicroSD card - strange. Unless I missed that with my weak eyes.

So my fear is if i'm backing-up 100 photos of .jpg resolution (taken from a "standard" 8MP camera in 4:3 ratio) would that Windows Phone struggle in uploading those files?
Nah, upload speed is a function of the connection. The CPU has very little to do with it. But I would chose a model where a 64GB MicroSD card is an option. Then you need not upload your stuff.

My choice is still the Lumia 925 at the moment.

Well, i was merely suggesting "if ever" i need to upload my photos in the cloud. My home wifi connection is at least 70MB so that means that should be faster isn't it? As i observed my old Xperia SP (with specs almost similar to the 925 i think) phone was uploading 30 photos (of similar space, etc.) and took almost 30 minutes so i thought hardware might also have something to do with the "slowness" of the uploading.

Nah, next time you upload something e.g. from your PC, check the CPU usage. You'll see that the CPU is hardly busy. 30 pictures, depending on the MPs of the camera, can be a lot of stuff. And then the speed of the receiving server also counts. E.g. if you upload videos to Youtube, different filetypes upload at different speeds. It has to do with the post processing they do at their site.

I've bought myself a Lumia 920 and i'm awaiting delivery in next few days. I just thought get a respectful and very good Windows Phone and see if the OS suits me. And reading about WP8.1 things are looking definitely getting better and moving forward.

I still feel having an optimised OS "working together" with the phone's hardware things should be better and should be the way. Having a 1.5Ghz dual-core phone w/ 1GB RAM (like the Lumia 920) would still be technically inferior to a 1.4Ghz quad-core w/ 2GB RAM right? If not for an optimised OS like Windows Phone 8 then yes i would agree that its more the connection type, files size, server issues, etc.

If i like my phone i keep it. And i usually keep the photos on my phone then saving it on the cloud for future use. But if the OS doesn't "help me" and make me feel confident with what it can do then what's the point of even having phone. Am i making sense?

You are making good sense. That 920 with dual core and the efficient 8 OS will do you quite nicely so far as speed.

Yes, the 1520 with quad core and 2GBs of RAM will be a little quicker, but as whs pointed out it mostly depends on the speed of the connection.

As coming off a Android myself, I'll guarantee you won't be disappointed by the navigation qualities. Far less scrolling to get to an item and the tabs are very convenient for multitasking.

e.g Just now for the life of me I couldn't remember how to spell guarantee. Lol! Gaur? No. Garr? No. Pressed & hold back key for tabs, scroll to get dictionary, look it up, then return to this page to finish. Easy.
