Placebo effect?

I'm not sure if it's a placebo effect or not, but I just finished installing that huge update to Windows 8.1 (~950MB) and now, for some reason, CPU intensive tasks seems a lot quicker.

I've also noticed that gaming is smoother since the update.

Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just experiencing a placebo?

We periodically release updates for Windows to include new features, the latest security protection, and the best drivers and software. Windows 8.1 Update and Windows RT 8.1 Update include improvements to make Windows more familiar and convenient for devices that use touch and mouse input and to make Windows available on a wider variety of devices, so you have more to choose from. Windows 8.1 Update and Windows RT 8.1 Update also include security and performance updates, and they must be installed for your PC to receive any future security updates for Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1

Im not sure on exactly what performance updates they mean, but it seems to be working for me too.

Ok so it isn't just me noticing it then. I've also noticed my cold boot time went from 2.4 seconds (Windows logo to Start screen) to 1.2 seconds. :D

Funny you mentioned it but I feel the same way.

Some things are definitely faster and the OS just seems to have a little different feel to it. If I pull up Reliability Monitor it is almost instantaneous whereas before it might take a couple seconds crunching the numbers. My Photoshop Programs were always fast but now they load even faster. I have yet to encounter any ill effects from the update and it's not because I am not looking.

Also, my system would generally sleep on schedule except after doing lots of intensive things like running scans or creating backups when it would stop going into sleep mode until after a restart but this no longer seems to be the case. Yesterday I ran scans, created a restore point, created a custom refresh image and then created a system image backup, walked away and the PC went to sleep on schedule. Don't know what this might mean for others but this is my observation on my PC.

I have also noticed that Windows Defender scans a lot faster now.

Did a full scan last night which ended up with a total of ~450,000 items and finished in under 20 minutes. Before the update, that same scan would take 45-60 minutes with the same amount of scanned items.

Well, they did continue to make Windows 8.1 better and coded it for dirt cheap low end tablets so that means for all the rest of us happy and efficient CPUs. :)

They most likely took out a lot of old code. There was rumor that some of the old 16-bit coding was going bye-bye. Same with some .dll's for older hardware.

With MS finally starting to use a lot more Open Source coding & GPL. You will start to see the OS finally getting lighter weight. 9.x is supposed to be redone for the Kernel. Now that Blamer is out of the game. Only time will tell what happens.

Since it is obvious that MS management finally realized that they needed to work with the developers of the other platforms. Even though they have been working with Apple for years. That was the only way that the company could stay afloat.

Microsoft officially lowered the minimum requirements of Windows 8.1 Update 1 to 1GB of memory and 16GB of storage. It used to require 2GB and 20GB of storage. So, they've significantly reduced the memory footprint and disk footprint.

They've been working to reduce CPU requirements too, so that lower spec ARM processors gain more boost from the updates. So it's probably not a placebo effect.

I'm not sure what you're talking about... Microsoft isn't using anything GPL in Windows. They also have very little open source based code either. In fact, I can't think of anything...

What might you be referring to...

Lee, I am guessing that you do not get outside of these forums. It has been mentioned in numerous interviews with Jobs & Gates, along with the new management of both Apple & MS. That Microsoft had to start working with Apple, or they were going to sink.

Their sales are stagnant right now across the board. But this is a discussion for something else. I suggest you watch the Steve Jobs Lost Interview, and there is also this article that is one of many. How Microsoft And Apple Work Together - Business Insider

Yes, Windows will install in as little as 512MB I think (maybe 256). It will work. But it's below minimum requirements standards.

Also, the 32 bit version of Windows 8 has always had a 1GB minimum requirement. The 64 bit had the 2GB requirement.

So I'm servicing a 64 bit of Windows 8.1.1 and so far, I haven't really seen much performance improvement. I'll need to install the update on my local machine to test it out.

Are you seeing a reduction in disk space after the update? I'm running Disk Cleanup in the VM (that's been changed) and there is a gig or so of Windows Update Cleanup. Thing is, I already cleared out the SoftwareDistribution Downloaded folder and it wasn't a whole gig worth...

It will be pretty difficult to see any space reduction on already installed system if any, on a new installation maybe. Same goes to any performance gains, by the time you do some customizations (and who doesn't ?) ad a few inevitable updates (they are offering to me 634 updates for Office) and you are back to square one and +.
I think all of that is just for very marginal systems. Hopefully, install is smart enough to recognize such a computer and install things accordingly. After all, WEI is run at time of installation and sets some features accordingly.
