Update to Windows 8.1 or not?

Hi guys,

A couple days earlier I had windows 8.1. And I must say that was an pain in the ass.
I couldn't run modern apps like music, video etc. and Tuneinradio or soundcloud wouldn't stream.
I tried everything to fix it but nothing helped. And now there is Windows 8.1 Update 1.. is it worth it to upgrade to that version? I don't want trouble again. I'm running Windows 8 now and works much better then Windows 8. I can run everything in Windows 8. My laptop is a HP Pavilion G6 2004sd notebook-pc.

Let me know please!

In the future you will need the update to get Windows Updates.
From what I've heard.

I installed the 5 or 6 small updates & then the big one.{800 & some MBs}

This morning I installed 2 more important updates.

The 2 new ones fixed some issues I was having.

The Start screen BG works now.

& an old program {Iconoid} started working again. :)

That's a good sign that it was worth upgrading. {To me}

If you make a system image using Macrium Reflect or something, it is possible to revert if you don't like the updates.
Or so it says on Google.

EDIT-- After the 2 new updates I could change my Lock screen picture again. :)

But like Adam says, if it isn't broken,it might not need fixing.

Thank you :) but I just noticed I can't upgrade to windows 8.1 for some reason. I'm using Windows 8 Pro now atm. It doesn't show the update in the Windows store.

  • Windows 8 Pro, if installed by an organisation or a program that uses Volume Licensing. Talk to your system admin, or the administrator of the program that was used to install Windows 8. If you’re the administrator, you can find more information and links to Windows 8.1 ISOs in the Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation.

    so.. does that mean I need to upgrade to enterprise now?

No, not at all. I had no problem upgrading my 8 - a while ago. It could be that you are missing some prerequisite updates. Run the update scan once (check for updates) and see whether it finds something.

I got all the updates. it doesn't find more updates. I'm downloading Windows 8.1 enterprise ISO now from microsoft. I hope I can upgrade from that ISO without losing my files.

Don't do it. That is no good. You have no activation key for Enterprise. And if you install it, you lose all your stuff and then you'll get stuck.

The Enterprise trial times-out after 90 days, but can be re-armed once, giving a further 90 days (at least the Win 8 Enterprise trial could). It cannot be re-armed a second time.

Then you have no choice but to do a clean install as it cannot be upgraded.

But I'm sure they will bring out a 8.1 update for Windows 8 pro right?

The update is out. It has worked for millions of people. We have to find what your problem is - but not tonight. It is after midnight.

And don't mess with Enterprise. It will gutt all your files. And if you really want to play with it, make an image of your current system to an external disk so that you can backpaddle.

I've installed every update that was available in Windows Update but alright. I'll reply once more tonight on this thread then. Thanks for your help.

Vision, I've just gone and installed a copy of Windows 8 Pro in an effort to provide some help, and the 8.1 update not only shows up in the Store, it's the first thing I see. Can't possibly miss it.

So, it should be showing up in yours. No idea why it isn't.

See below.

Hi there
Tried also (via a VM) -- installed W8 PRO from scratch -- then updated to W8.1 -- worked fine

If all else fails re-install Windows and then do the update. (Backup any USER data first BTW).

Cheers
