After Windows 8.1 Update 1, crashing coming out of sleep

My Dell XPS 9000 desktop was running smoothly prior to last night's Windows 8.1 Update 1, now unable to come out of sleep mode. It initializes, but then quickly dies. Powering up manually is successful, no error messages after.

Have searched the issue with no returns and attempted to update the driver for my ATI Radeon HD 4850, but was unsuccessful (?) The AMD Catalyst software installed, but the driver install itself failed. Current driver is 'ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.1)'

Any help diagnosing would be greatly appreciated!

I was just about to ask a very similar question. My laptop won't come out of sleep mode either. I close the lid or put it into sleep mode manually and it won't wake up. I have to hold down the power button to restart. I've mostly messed with the power setting to no avail. It seems like there is something preventing it from waking up, rather than the "won't go to sleep" problem that earlier versions of Win8 were having.

I have a suspicion that it has something to do with how 8.1 recognizes my Intel graphics chipset and Nvidia card. But really, thats just a suspicion.

gball, definitely right that this is a different issue than the well-documented 'won't sleep' problem. Any luck on your end?

I have same issue. Memory dump shows it is in system and HAL issue.
Issue started immediately after 8.1 update 1.
Updated as many drivers as possible.
Looks to be an update issue. Can't spend any more time on this. Hoping that MS will address shortly, as I do believe this is something on their end.
BTW - This is XPS 9000 also with Nvidia GEForce 260

FYI, have found a temporary solution in changing the AHCI setting from S3 to S1, resumes fine after.

Thanks. Really don't like that option, but guess is better than nothing.

Thanks ATLheel, your quick fix work for me as well. I'm having the exact same problem as you after installing 8.1 update computer goes to sleep but when I try to wake it it crashes. I also have a Dell Studio XPS 435t / 9000 and besides gball the three of us have the same PC make coincidence? Could be an issue with Dell's Bios or something, who knows but hope some will fix the issue
