After installing W8.1 update 1 (from TechNet so "a proper update") .
Anybody know what is ACRESSO INSTALL SHIELD -- this seems to start as a service (since disabled it) - I installed a few "Normal programs" such as ADOBE photo shop / reader. Ms Office etc -- nothing from a torrent and I saw it in the list of services
(You need to be quick because it then seems to disappear after a short while -- I only noticed it because I was running W8.1 update 1 as a VM on a VERY HEAVILY loaded Host so performance of the VM was much slower than normal and I had time to look at the start up processes).
How do I get rid of it permanently -- not much on Google over this.
I didn't have this "Feature" on W8.1 BEFORE I installed update 1 (from TechNet so it should be clean).

1 x Kingston 120G HyperX SSD (Swap)

1 x Seagate SATA III 1TB Barracuda (Media to XBox)
1 x W/Digital SATA II 300G VelociRaptor (Image)
It isn't a Microsoft addition. It sometimes comes from the computer manufacturers source, but I cannot see how it got there through a Windows update.
You will probably find it in the startup list in the task manager. remove it and see if you can then uninstall it in the normal "Programs and features". way.
Hi there
I decided in the end to do a complete CLEAN re-install of Windows 8.1 update 1 -- I' have the ISO from Technet (Windows Enterprise).
It's usually good to do complete re-installs from time to time -- there's quite a few programs that I've previously installed - that I don't use or need any more so a complete re-install tidies up the system anyway.
These days a fresh CLEAN install especially if you have the target OS on an SSD doesn't take long at all !!! (7 mins I think it took me last time) - especially if you boot the install from a USB (I don't have physical dvd's any more -- just one external cheap USB device for the rare cases I might need to rip something from a physical DVD -- and I've long ripped all my MUSIC CD's (to FLAC) .
Thanks for the replies - I'll mark as solved now -- still don't know what program had this "weird" install shield" thingy. Might have been something like NUANCE PDF reader --gone back to adobe.
