Do I really need 8.1??

Folks,
We have win 8 on our Dell desktop (no touch screen) and are currently doing all that we desire to do.
Is there a real problem in ignoring 8.1 and just keep on keeping on happily with what we have??
Regards,

Roger Pillow

There's an old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I have 8.0 and I see no reason to go through the upgrade travail. If you are happy why temp fate? Granted many have a smooth experience. But some get hosed. You don't know which it will be until you get into it.

8.1 has been known to break some things. But it has been more of random cases. Such as older hardware, OEM's not keeping up with Microsoft on its updates, etc..

yes it does cause issues for some computers and its hardware .
as long as it keeps getting security updates I see no reason to update, but if you use the metro start screen you will be missing out on the changes they made to it ,changes that a lot of people really wanted to see for the start screen .
the new features seen on this link .

I think an important consideration is how comfortable/confident you feel you are with dealing with any issues resulting form the upgrade to 8.1. By far any issues seem to be mostly minor but sometimes frustrating. Problems with incompatible drivers seem to be the most prevalent but generally easily fixed. Age of your hardware, brand and how many additional program installations you have on your system is another factor. If you have backup capabilities to create system images and reimage you system and feel comfortable doing so makes the choice a lot easier to make because if the upgrade causes problems you can always reload a previous system image. Another important consideration might be is how important is your PC to you on a daily basis. If, in a worst case scenario, you were to lose function of your PC for a day or so post upgrade, would that pose a hardship?. Do you have another device that you can use to fall back on? If not, this could be good reason to hold off.

On the other hand, if you don't have any backup capabilities and really don't like the thought of dealing with any post upgrade issues or don't feel comfortable doing so then it's probably best to stay with 8.0 but you must understand that 8.1 is a whole new operating system when compared to 8.0 and 8.1 will continue to be improved and enhanced whereas I don't believe 8.0 will.

Do you really need to upgrade to 8.1? NO! but what you currently have will likely not change and any future bugs that might surface may be difficult to solve.

If you closely follow the tutorials for determining if your system is capable and/or ready for the upgrade you can greatly minimize and even eliminate problems.

You will have to update to 8.1 probably some time in 2016 if you still want monthly updates

I did an upgrade out of 8. I just got tired of the issues dealing with clocking, while trying to pull up shares off of a NAS on my network, along with bad drivers.

Unless MS makes a huge change with the Kernel for 9. You are going to see 8.x as the kill off of the company.

Other than being annoyed with the tablet style interface of 8 which I pretty much removed, I've found 8 to be a pretty solid OS.
