Hi please can one of you talented people help me. I have a Windows 8 HP laptop and the screen is just flashing. I have looked through other users posts and tried a few things but nothing is fixing the issue. I can't get past the flashing screen to enter Control panel, Safe boot or anything as the flashing is preventing me getting anywhere!! All help is very much appreciated!! Lots of photos not backed up so don't want to lose them! Thanks

Check out this tutorial on how to boot into safe mode: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2757-safe-mode-start-windows-8-a.html

How old is the laptop? If it's still in warranty, you may want to send it back to HP for repair.

hmm. I wonder if that is the same problem I have. Boot begins, I see desktop image and icons begin appearing in taskbar. After 2 seconds, It aborts and starts over. Kind of winds up looking like blinking, but I do see those first four icon appear over and over and over... Will check the Safe Mode link in above post.

If it is the Desktop disappearing and reappearing, most likely bad driver or bad display chip set, that is causing the problem.

I have the same problem on my Dell laptop and have been told I picked up a couple trojans (have been removed) and many files are corrupt. Rather than try to fix them I am trying to do a reset to factory. I keep getting messages saying there was a problem, etc.
Anyway, I am now running in Safe Mode with Networking, with a hard wire to my modem.

yes, that scan has been done and the trojans removed but there are hundred of corrupt files. The flashing issue remains so the only way I can use the laptop is in the safe mode. At this point, I just want to reset it to factory but get a message that "there was a problem resetting your pc", and "no changes were made".

give this a try ,right click on the start icon ,go to system, in there go to advanced system settings on the top left ,in there go to the advanced tab ,then the start up and recovery settings ,then In the system failure section ,uncheck automatically restart if it has a check in it ,ok you way out ,and reboot the computer to see what happens ,it is likely to make no difference but won't hurt to try

Nothing happens when I right click on the Start icon. Is that because I am in safe mode?

At least I learned that access to the troubleshooting menus is reached by tapping ESC or F2 immediately after poweron.
The recovery steps did not help me with the flashing/quick booting loop. Hoping restore to factory original will work.

yeah, factory restore usually has good results ,except you gotta start all over installing software ,and you will loose all data,music/picturs you my have created or downloaded

Out of warranty!!

I talked to Dell today and requested the disks to reinstall my operating system, etc. Since my waranty has just expired, I would have to pay for any other technical advice. They won't charge me this time......

I had this same frustrating issue & this was how I resolved it.

1. Since the flashing screen couldn't allow me restart my PC in safe mode, I pressed the power button to force a shut down.
2. I pressed the power button to start up and pressed the power button again after 2 secs to create an unusual shutdown.
3. On next attempt to start up (by pressing power button again), Windows tried to repair startup so I could now boot into safe mode with networking.
4. I already realised the flashing issue had to do with my Norton 360 installation so I had to find a way to properly uninstall it.
5. I Googled "Norton_Removal_Tool" from Norton and downloaded it.
6. Since safe mode wouldn't normally allow installations, I downloaded "SafeMSI" to enable me install/unistall in safe mode.
7. After running "Safe MSI", I installed "Norton_Removal_Tool" to remove all Norton products/services.
8. The above action demanded a restart which I obliged to.
9. Non essential step: I ran Malwarebytes to confirm that all is alright & switched to a new antivirus.
10. My PC is back and happy again : )
