Hello

I will be running a full screen program on a windows 8 all-in-one pc. The computer will be placed in a public place and i would not like a user to be able to access the desktop. A program will be preloaded and takes up the entire screen. I have heard that a person will be able to access the desktop just by swiping the screen. Is this correct?

This is correct. Or by pressing Alt+F4 you get access to Start. Win+D gives access to the desktop.

Your only options is to have software written to prevent it or setup a non admin user account and hope that you can restrict users from things you don't want them to have access to. I don't have other user accounts to advise you. Maybe WHS or somebody else can assist.

The easiest is to run it from a user account (not admin account). At least then they cannot make much damage.

How would you stop people from accessing the desktop with windows 7? Are they using a keyboard?
I am not familiar with what an "All in one" computer is Nor do I know what people will have access to.

Could you give us more detail Elenac?

If the end user is having to give input via keyboard, all they need to do is Alt+Tab for instance, 85% of people familiar with a computer would know to do that.

You could have someone write or adjust your registry keys to set up your application as the Windows shell. Way out of my league. but you would have to do the same with windows 7.

How do you as the administrator get past the full screen via your application (regardless if win 7 or 8) Once opened does it need a password to minimize? How does it work.

As we dont know anything about your system its a little hard.

There is always the possibility of disabling swiping.

There will be no keyboard or mouse. Only the touchscreen. The user needs to touch the screen to run through the application.
With windows 8 i have been told that with the touchscreen the user can swipe the screen and access the desktop but with windows 7 they cannot do this. Not sure if my information is correct

7 or 8 - no difference. People who know the systems can always muck it up. In a public place and on the high seas you are exposed to the elements, LOL.

The other days I wanted to check out laptops at BestBuy. On half of them someone had changed the password to access it. Even the BestBuy guys did not know how to access them. There are, of course, ways to fix that.

OK, I still know nothing about the computer or screen :)
Could you give us the full model of the computer and screen? Do you mean all in one computer as in the screen is permanently attached to the pc? Its one unit?

Generally touchscreens have settings associated with them. Disabling swiping is more than possibly an option.

You can also disable touch gestures and the touch screen entirely, if you really want to. If you have a Windows 8 device that supports touch, disabling the touch screen is actually a fairly bad idea — you’re giving up a feature that allows you to interact with Windows 8 much more easily. As Microsoft says, Windows 8 is a “touch-first” operating system. Nevertheless, you may want to disable the touch screen for certain rare reasons — perhaps the touch screen is faulty, creating “ghost” presses that send input to the computer when you’re not touching it. If your device is out of warranty and the touch screen is causing problems, disabling it completely will fix the problem.
You can disable the touch screen from the Control Panel. Open the Windows Control Panel and click the Hardware and Sound option. Select Pen and Touch, click the Touch tab, and uncheck the Use your finger as an input device checkbox. Click OK to save your settings.
lenovo-ideapad-yoga-13-ultrabook-review-12.jpg

You can also open the Device Manager, locate the touch-screen device in the list of connected devices, and disable it from here. This will prevent Windows from using the device at all until you re-enable it, so the device won’t be able to send Windows any input signals. We don’t recommend doing this, but you can if you want.
Do you find the touchpad and mouse gestures useful on Windows 8, or do they just get in the way? Leave a comment and let us know whether you’ve disabled Windows 8 gestures or whether you use them frequently.

Personally, if all this computer is going to be used for is this one application, I wouldn't bother installing Windows 8. I am surprised that the software designers haven't included documentation to make you aware of what is required and what is possible. Anyway, I can't suggest anything else as all I know is what you have told us which isn't much. I'll check back later.

Accessing desktop with touch screen monitor and no keyboar

hello

I have an application that will run on a touch screen monitor. The touch screen will be placed in a public area for use by anyone.

the application that will be running, will tak up the entire screen and there is no minimize, maximize or close button. My question is..can a user access the desktop somehow without a keyboard? I was informed that by swiping at the top right of the screen they will be able to access the desktop. Is this correct?

As you can understand due to confidentiality issues etc. i need to ensure that noone has the ability to access the desktop.

Regards,
Elena

Hi Shawn,

Thank you for your reply. I had a quick glance at the link you sent above. So if i use assigned access will this ensure the user cannot access anything else on the desktop? I will have an excel spreadsheet with client data and also the configuration settings for the applciation that will be running on that computer.

Are there any known issues if i upgrade from windows 8 to 8.1?

Elena

8.1 adds a drop down title bar to Metro Apps with a minimize "-" button and a close "X" button. That may put another wrinkle into your lock down plans. There is also a taskbar at the bottom of metro apps but that can be turned off.

Elena,

Assign Access is a renamed Kiosk Mode. The user account you set for this will only run the app you assign when they sign in, and will not be able to do anything else. :)

If i disable the charm bar and the hot corners will the user be able to access the desktop in any other way? Are the disabling features available in Windows 8 and 8.1?

There will be no mouse or keyboard attached - only the touch screen

Yes, the user could always press the :winkey: + D keys to go to the desktop, or just go to the Start screen and tap on the Desktop tile.

Did you give what I posted above about Assigned Access a try to see if that may work for you? That should work for what you wanted.

I was hoping to avoid using Assigned access because even with that, the user can minimize the application.

The application can run on both Windows 7 and Windows 8. The problem is that it is hard to come across windows 7 on touch screens. I will be using HP PC All in one envy recline.

The user will not have access to a keyboard or a mouse, so they cannot press :winkey: + D.

Even if they were able to minimized the app in Assigned Access in Windows 8, they would not be able to do anything else.

If you like, give it a play to test it and see how it may work for you.
