I am using ASUS (S550CB) and given installed win 8 at purchase time so, no cd,key&backup provided to me. And unfortunately i also didn't make the backup. And now a BCD\Boot\ file is missing as a result at boot time a blue screen come.
But now i pressed the F9 at boot time so, a screen open in which option's are available to open windows(I think it is a safe mode) or to troubleshoot(for image recovery back up), I select image and it is saying that there is no recovery image in this computer add a cd/dvd for backup/recovery image.

So, my question is can i open the openwindows(Safe Mode)(pressing F9) and take a back up in my USB and then again to recover image. Is that possible because my BCD/Boot/ file is missing????????????

You can also use Clonezilla to make a backup to a USB Drive, DVD-R, NAS. You would need to download Tuxboot at tuxboot.org and use that to create the boot media (USB Pen drive or CD).

It is what is called an offline backup utility. It operates just like how Norton/Symantic Ghost used to operate. Running a backup while in Windows, does not unlock certain resources.

This has to fail David because in safe mode you have no shadowstorage services which Macrium and other imaging programs use to make their initial snapshot so that you can continue working whilst they fabricate the image.

@ zobid - download the Macrium WinPE iso from my skydrive and burn that to CD.

Then boot the PC with that CD and make your image. A USB stick must be at least 32GB (probably even more) to hold any sensible image.

You only need a 8GB USB Drive, or SD Card in a USB reader for Clonezilla to run on. Once you boot up, you can run it in the RAM, which speeds up the process.

Not to say that the alternatives are any different. The Majority of the PE's out there are Linux based.

That's not the point. I was referring to the device where you store your image. The WinPE is only about 160MBs.

Where you store your image, you have to have equal to the size of the drive that you are cloning. My last Windows Clone with Clonezilla was 25GB. My son's was 44GB. My Linux Clone image was only 9GB with even a VM with Windows 7 on the system.

If you are making incremental backups. You need at least a minimum 1TB drive. Preferably a RAID 1 or RAID 5 setup, so that if you lose one drive in the RAID array, you do not lose all of your data.

Where you store your image, you have to have equal to the size of the drive that you are cloning

That may be so with Clonzilla, but it is not true for other imaging programs. E.g. in Macrium the image is appr. 65% of the data you image - the size of the partition you image is irrelevant.

But full system images are usually not small. That's why I warned against trying to use a USB flash drive to place the image - although these days there are flash drives of up to 120GB.

WHS, you do not place the image on the USB Stick. The USB stick is used as a boot device, so you can image the drive offline to a DVD, USB hard drive plugged into the computer, or a NAS on your LAN, using NFS for the backup.

If you expect to use a USB Pen Drive to make a backup, it would never happen.

I put images all the time on my 120GB USB3 stick. What's wrong with that? For the rescue I boot from another USB stick.

On my tablet, I even place Macrium images on the MicroSD card. But for the recovery you need a special WinPE. The normal WinPE that Macrium produces does not recocnize the SD card.

The stick is a lot faster than an external HDD. Have a look:

There is nothing wrong with that WHS. But USB sticks have been known to fail, along with getting corrupted. That is why I do not use them for saving backups. I get on average with Clonezilla, 1.78gbps downloads to the NAS, when doing backups. I have seen it go as fast as 2.5 gbps. You cannot get those kind of speeds with a USB stick or USB drive.

You want to do it in an Offline mode. In other words, when the OS is not running. Windows locks processes even in the Safe mode. So it makes it hard to do certain things.

Nas is fine. At home I use SSHDs and SSDs for backup. But on the road with this tablet that is not very practical. I always have more images on disks that I make at home. You have to diversify. I have 10 different disks/media to backup my 6 systems. Never lost 1 bit - knock on wood.

Not clear to me what the op's machine is doing. I don't know how he can get into safe mode if bcd is missing. It is more likely a bcd entry is missing or corrupt.

Making a backup image isn't going to fix that. Best to run startup repair from some kind of boot media.

Or, if he can get into safe mode, he can try fixing the entry using commands.
