So every once in a while when I boot up there is a work group icon on the desktop which I cannot delete. The only way I can remove the icon is to reboot. What is the icon coming up for and is there a way to remove the icon?

Its a know bug, and no fix. It's not a real problem, just annoying.

What known bug is that. Never heard of this one. Really need more information from the OP regarding this. Along with what they mean by "Workgroup" Icon.

Never have had it happened in the five years that I have used Windows 7 & Windows 8.x. Must be a unknown one that those of us that have been around computers a long time, that only a select few know about.

Jim, I have ran 8.1 since the day it came out to the public. I have never had an issue with the work group icon playing Harry Houdini on any of my machines.

I have had with XP & Vista, users complain about Icons playing Harry Houdini, but those problems were related to profiles (ie user deleting a group wide icon from the desktop, not realizing it affected other users.) The problem was due to the admin who set up the machines did not realize how to properly set up profiles.

How they became an admin, strikes me as why they should even be allowed access to the servers and network gear. But that is another topic.

Now with 8.1 recently, it has been known to have issues with LLTD. The problem being that the workstation forgets or loses dns information on other machines on the network, that have Static IP's.

Thanks for all the responses, I will just go with it being a bug as I have had this problem on multiple PC's running 8.1 and I am pretty sure I am not the problem on this one, maybe the update coming up here soon will fix the issue.

It happens on my 8.1 also. I slide it to recycle and do a desktop refresh, gone.

If you have Windows 8.1 Pro, go to gpedit.msc

then Computer configuration > Administrative templates > Windows Components > Home Group > Prevent the computer from joining a home group

then restart

I never EVER see the Home Group icon

If you don't have Windows 8.1 Pro and have no acces to gpedit.msc

then this will work for sure

If you don't use homegroup you can disable the services :)winkey: + R and type services.msc). That also works after reboot.
