Windows 8.1 Autocorrect

Hopefully someone can help me with this. I have a laptop which is not touch screen with Windows 8.1. I am trying to find where to maintain auto correct etc., such as adding words, capitalising at start of sentences, that sort of thing. I have done just as asked by various things online but I don't see what they say I should see I. I have attached a photo to explain it a little. When I get to this point I only see 'Spelling' below that is nothing. I am not very techno minded and am struggling very much with Windows 8.1. To be honest it is really stopping me using my laptop. Thank you so much for reading

Wow! A first poster answering a first poster. :thumb:

Welcome both of you to Windows EightForums. :)

Blondey, The pic you're showing is 8. I noticed you have 8.1. Unless I'm missing something, unfortunately they removed auto correct in this edition, so you won't have all those extra options. With the cursor in or just after the misspelled word push Shift/F10 and choose an optional word. That's the best I know how.

You should see this in typing settings:

Thank you so much, I have windows 8.1 and yes the picture is exactly what I see. So in other words there is no-where where unusual words can be added (such as my place of work) or where I can alter a setting so that it knows to capitalise at the beginning of sentences. If this is so, that is definitely a step backwards

Yes, I agree, Blondey. I think they were making the OS smaller as to save resources. You can add words to your local dictionary as listed in the Shift/F10 dropdown menu as seen below. There are other language settings in Control Panel > Language > Advanced you may want to tweak. The "Manage Language" in the menu list will open that as well. Hope that helps you.

Hello there, ir3n3m. I was not a member there. I see in your system specs you list 7. Are you considering upgrading?

Never say 'no' is my motto.

I must admit that I have not had much, if any, exposure to W8 so far. From the comments which I've seen, it didn't appear to get off to a very good start. However, with assistance from forums like these, I might just take the plunge. :D

Have it your way, but I believe the saying goes “Never say never”. ;)

I enjoy 8/8.1 tremendously. Admittedly a different approach to an OS, but I don’t see where all the fuss is other than releasing 8 as it was. It did get bad press. MS should have released 8.1 instead. That way what I call the “Desktoppers” would have been able to boot to the Desktop app instead of the Start Screen. Too big a change for some or they just plainly rejected the Modern/Metro side, which BTW is the main stay side, but shh, don’t mention that to them. :p It is a portal treated like a Store app so far as use and navigation.

Things seemed to have calmed down a bit here after 8.1 release. Some are happy using the Desktop portal and All Apps. Some make use of native Taskbar menus to replace the Start Menu. Some use 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] party personalization programs to make it as close to previous OSs as they can get it. Those will never really see the brilliance and beauty of the whole system. All in all, most will agree it is a fast and reliable OS.

Then there's the market side of the matter which is a whole different story.

Anywho, good luck in your endeavor and again, welcome to 8F.
