I have this problem since windows 8 (I now have 8.1). Whenever I right click on anything; it takes about half a minute to bring up the menu. This is frustrating to say the least. Anyone experiencing the same problem?

Strange problem you have.

Have you ever run sfc & dism ?

If not, I put them in a batch file for easy usage.
The batch file runs sfc & dism & sfc over again.
Then you should reboot.

This scanning & repairing MIGHT help you with your problem.
It won't hurt anything.

If you want to try it, download it & right click it & click Properties & Unblock it if it is blocked.

Scan it with your antivirus if you wish.
It is safe. :)

Then right click it & click Run as administrator.

It will probably take 2 or 3 hours to finish.
You can leave it run in the background if you wish.

Batch file:

The problem might be caused by incompatible Shell Extension(s) installed by third party software.

Please download: ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows

  1. This program does not require installation, just right click and run as Administrator
  2. From the menu, click on Options then click on Filter by Extension Type and select Context Menu
  3. On the list, you'll see some of the entries with pink background, those are installed by the third party software
  4. Hold down CTRL Key and select all of them then click on the red button on top left corner to disable.
  5. Click on the Options again and select Restart Explorer
  6. Now try to right click on desktop to see if it fix your problem. If it does then start to enable one by one and repeat step 5 until the problem occurs again, that's the offending extension.

It could be all of that, but mostly it may be a problem with your System Hard Drive. Find your Install Media, be it on DVD, Flash drive or USB Drive, boot from it, and begin an Install - Go into Troubleshooting options, find Advanced Options, get the COmmand Prompt and run CHKDSK (Drive Letter for OS drive): /x /f - Like CHKDSK c: /x /f

You can only fix a problem like that from outside of your Windows 8 Installation, and all you need a any Windows 8 or 8.1 install disk, doesn't even have to be the same version, all you need is the command Prompt from it. The reason for this is because you can't really run CHKDSK on your OS drive in any reliable fashion, and be able to see what it's doing. I can't trust the "Automatic Repair" it will just show that it's "Repairing the drive" but it does not show you exactly what it is doing like it will in the Command Prompt.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Thank you all for your feedback. I have tried everything bar the last solution because my laptop came with preinstalled windows 8. I did make an emergency disk. Will this do?

If you can get to a Command Prompt, maybe, but be careful using the disk. Usually the emergency disk works in conjunction with a recovery partition that's on the HDD.

Is it windows 8 or 8.1? If it's 8, you can find an ISO image for Windows 8 on the net, just downlaod one and burn it, boot to it.

I've found 8.1 install disks on the net, but it took me a while to find, I lost the link cos it was in my old Windows 8 system that crashed irrecoverably.

Thanks for the reply. My problem is that here in Tanzania my internet speed rarely exceeds 56Kbps so downloading an 8.1 image iso is out of the question. I will try to ask a frien in Switzerland to find me a link and ask my son in Greece to download it for me and send it by courier.

I tried to find 8.1 iso but it is nowhere to be found. Seriously now; what are we the ones who bought our laptops with preinstalled windows to do? If we ever need to reinstall we are F@#$D!

Anyone know where I can find a link to download the 8.1 iso?
