Unable to perform recovery - Required partition is missing

Hi all

I have an i7 ASUS Ultrabook (HDD is 2xssd in raid0, UEFI, GPT partitions.) which is great but have an issue where wifi profiles don't retain and i'm not too concerned about retaining the data on the ultrabook so after attempting to fix the wifi profiles not saving (Have been through the driver scenario, folder permissions, sfc, etc and no joy) i'm just going to do a clean install from the recovery partition.

Now

I started by trying the recovery methods 8 has built in, refresh the files, but fails without an error and makes no changes. Attempted to do a full restore via 8 recovery also but fails with no error also and then I realized I was actually missing the OEM options (F9 during boot doesn't allow for EMS boot to begin recovery from recovery partition like expected, just boots into normal recovery)

After installing windows 8.1 it no longer allows me to do an OEM recovery via Windows 8.1's built in recovery methods so I created a recovery USB from the recovery partition using the windows 8 tool since the AI Recovery Burner doesn't recognize the partition, the USB recovery creation did recognize the partition and allow me to create the USB recovery drive from this successfully.

When running the USB recovery, the recovery fails with "Required drive partition is missing"

I think this is because the recovery partition is actually a windows 8 partition, not 8.1, and will not work.

Seems like a lot of effort but I want to retain the OEM key and software set (because it's surprisingly not a piece of trash) so was thinking if I install windows 8 (I have an ISO and another key) over the existing 8.1 partition it may actually allow me to then do the normal recovery.

Since the recovery drive did not work I decided to clone the recovery partition and have the WIM file now, although since cloning the partition when running recovery I no longer have the option to create a recovery drive using the recovery partition, the partitions no longer show as recovery partitions in disk management but instead as OEM partitions (Not sure why this changed.)

The recovery xml configuration for REAGENTC does have the correct GUID's and offsets for the partitions although when running this in elevated cmd it results in error 3 unable to run.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do next? Am I able to create a base recovery drive from another windows 8.1 pc and use the WIM file?

Any help is appreciated :(

EDIT: As an after thought, is there any way to tell what partition table my created recovery drive is expecting so I can adjust the current partitions to match and perform the recovery? When I try to refresh the files from this recovery I get the error "Windows system is locked" which is why I went for the full recovery

Believe i've worked out the cause although not sure how to resolve

I noticed that reagentc would not start, resulting in error 3, I assigned the two hidden recovery partitions, one with winre, and one with the recoveryimage, drive letters and then the service would start. Although when the system is restarted or shut down the drives lose their letters.

When the drives have letters recovery does attempt to begin, but once restarted into RE, since the drive letters go again it falls over and starts RE as if it has been user invoked

I suppose at this stage I need to know how to make these letter assignments permanent until I can complete the recovery

I still cannot recover from recovery media due to the partition missing (suspect reason is above) and the windows is locked error (even with secure boot disabled and bcdedit rebuilt etc)

Thanks for that but the access to the ASUS OEM recovery options were nuked out when 8.1 installed, the keys to access this no longer work and the asus recovery partition is no longer in the uefi boot table

I set up a Brand New Windows 8 machine, it was HP - I left it at 8. Chances are, if the machine was originally 8 and you upped it to 8.1, the recovery partition will not be able to be invoked.

I went to the HP site and I clicked the link that said "Order Recovery Media for your PC" and it redirected me all over the net to unrelated results! I'll have to call them physically to try to get the Media!

I think the oem recovery program in boot.wim ( might be called winre.wim on yours) is expecting a very specific volume layout.

The solution is to skip that and just apply the image yourself. You would need to have a look at install.wim and see what images are in there. If there is more than one, choose the pushbuttonrest image, or similarly named. Apply it to the original windows partition. You may still need to correct the drive letter, you can do all of that by using the winpe maker thing I made. Just extract it and run as admin on the .cmd file. You should end up with winpe containing the tools you need to do the job.

[ It relies on being able to find winre.wim. You can save it the trouble of looking by putting winre.wim right next to .cmd file. ]

Just making a new version will post links a short while.

We had a situation where a third party partitioning software would modify the recovery partitions on a UEFI install. To see if this is your situation, use Diskpart to list the partitions on the drive and see if any show the Type as OEM.

I have not noticed before someone saying putting drive letters on the partitions allowed the reagentc commands to complete. But changing the Partition Type to a basic data partition, such as the OS partition, will allow the drive letter to stay. When you are finished you can change it back and reset the attributes.

You can check what the ID and attributes are on the partition before you change them. Copy and paste in a Command Prompt window can save a lot of typing.

I wish we had found an answer to Repair the Recovery system, but I suppose that still eludes us.

Hi again.

So far, so good. After using this version and creating the WinPE and ran it from an USB, I could suddenly select *.wim which the program had found and it went through the proces of formatting the drive and restoring the only image I could choose, and at the end I could reboot.

My Asus XC550CC starts up with "Please Wait" and spinning dots for about 10 minutes, and then suddenly stands at a login screen where it says "Other User" and you need to login, but no matter what I write anything works. I tried to boot from the USB again and can see in Explore that there is something on the C drive, so something has it done, but why dosen't it go through the process as if it was a computer I had just bought and I have to install?

Am I missing something in this process or doing something wrong?

Best regards SilentDK

Hello All,

I am new to EightForums, have been researching to find a fix to a similar problem. I have an ASUS S56C ultrabook that has an original 500GB + 24GB(SSD) that was originally running Win 8.0 64bit that was hosed by following instructions from ASUS tech support and now they have no media to do reinstall. When I say hosed, I mean on boot the laptop is looking for an OS. My last step performed with guidance from ASUS was to create a USB with their ASUS Backtracker Software. Upon bootup from this USB it goes through the motions where it initialized the hardrive then went to restore an image but it could not find image on the flash drive. When I search the original hard drive utilizing Ubuntu live CD I can see main directories but I cannot see anything below them. When I mount the created flash USB I do see folders: BOOT | EFI | en-US | RECOVERY | RecoveryImage | Sources. Under RECOVERY there is a WindowsRE folder and a winre.wim file (329mb). Under RecoveryImage are asus.swm ; asus2.swm ; asus3.swm and asus4.swm

I have access to 32 bit machines running Windows Vista and Ubuntu 12.04LTS and I read SIW2's procedure from this page http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/39197-unable-use-built-asus-recovery-partition-6.html. Obviously, I cannot move forward with 64 bit version.

Any suggestions and/or directions would be greatly appreciated.
