How to disable metro apps from running at startup?

I use windows 8.1 and have enabled boot-to-desktop.

Every time after booting into windows, when I check task manager, there are some metro apps already running in the background, like reading list, onenote and reader.

Is there a way to stop metro apps from automatically running at startup?

EDIT: Ok, the issue resolved itself. I don't know how, but they are not running in the background anymore, except for store which is obvious.

I suppose they were doing some sort of scanning or indexing maybe.

Welcome to Windows EightForums, eddman.

That is strange, for I don’t have the same, save OneNote. I sign in using MS account and am big on Store apps. OneNote is an ever running Win32 desktop Office program, so we can expect that to run unless you choose not to. Here is a tutorial by Brink on startup programs.

Here is my Task Manager list. Strange to me that you have those Store apps running, especially the Store app itself.

The weird thing is that even if I close those apps by dragging to bottom-holding-release after flipping, they still come back after a few minutes.

Like I stated in my post, I don't understand why they are opening for you in the first place other than > Are you using a local account? If more accounts, all are local?

Did you go through the tutorial and make any necessary changes?

Sliding down and waiting for flip should close them out totally, although they take about 10 to 15 seconds. Mine do and they don't reappear. Try Alt/F4 to close out apps. I have found that if the flip doesn't happen the app eventually becomes dormant using less RAM just to let you know if not already.

Yes, it's a local account. There is also another account, but I don't use it and is disabled too.

There is nothing in the tutorial about metro apps running at startup.

Ok. sorry for the delay. I had to eat.

That's right. Store apps wouldn't show up in startup because that's the "other side", meaning Win32. Did you see OneNote there? Do you use it?

Not sure, but perhaps The Store and other Store apps show up because you have a local account, whereas I have MS account. I really don't know what to tell you. I'll do research. I don't have test machines that other members have. Perhaps someone will come along. I'll be back.

You would have to disable them on the Metro side by clicking on the item and . One Note, you can disable from the Startup group in All Programs. You would need Classic Shell or Start8, or go to C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs to delete it from there.

You can also go into the Registry to: Computer\hkey_Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion and look in Run & Run once for those items you do not want to have start on boot into Windows. Also check the hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion Run & Run Once folders for the items, delete the items you do not starting on boot into windows.

Also check Task Scheduler in Administrative tools, for items that may be in there scheduled to run or start.

@ eddman:
Many of those Metro processes, and others, are kept 'suspended' in the background by 'Parent' processes. You can kill the process chain by right clicking on the process then choosing 'Go to details', then right click on the detail and choose 'End process tree'.
It is, however, wise to do a little research on what you are 'killing'.
I've found it helpful to run Process Explorer from Sysinternals. It expands, if you will, the process chain and gives way more insight to the way the chain works.
It's a free, standalone utility:
Process Explorer
