Have to press FN to use F keys

A few days ago I went to turn up the volume from my keyboard and it would TAB me over to a different item on my screen. I tried pressing all of the Function keys and it messed up all sorts of things on my computer. I found out that if I hold down the FN key the F keys will work properly. How can I get it back to normal?

On Toshiba Satellite there is a setting with a dropdown box to toggle normal Fkey mode or Fnkey must be held down.

On W8 in Tools and Utilities in Toshiba start folder it is called "Function Key" not HWSetup

(If you have a Toshiba that is.)

How to change the Function Keys Mode

You can also change the behavior in the bios MilesAhead. I found it annoying, having to press FN and the Function key, to do stuff. But of course you run into problems that when companies like Toshiba assign quick commands to the Function keys, you have to go back to using FN and the function key (ie Outlook Send/Receive email).

I can toggle that setting on my Logitech keyboards though the Setpoint software. I haven't found any way to change it on my ASUS laptop though. If yours has changed from one mode to the other there must be a way to switch it back. More info on make and model of laptop or keyboard would help.

True. But I use F1 and Alt-F4 much more often than I use brightness control or volume. Holding down Fn for that is no biggie for me. Plus I'm a mouse person anyway. I usually open the volume control in the Task Tray to adjust volume.

Same here. I hate the touchpads, so I only use a mouse when using my laptop. As for the Fn with Function key, I have to remind myself to hit the combo, when doing something that requires the function key.
