HDD activity probs during shutdown, boot and after sleep

Hi folks, really would appreciate help on a problem that started two weeks ago. My machine is a [h=3]15.6-inch NP350V5C Series 3 Essential NotebooK currently running Windows 8.1, but 8 when problem started.[/h]
I installed Creative Cloud (licensed) server and installed Adobe apps on Monday 18thth Feb. The next day laptop went into several boot cycles then restored to prior to download. I thought this was as I had many driver updates pending via Samung's SW Update so I installed these. the next day I reinstalled the Adobe apps and once again the boot cycle (hours at a time) began. System restore failed but following a scannow, disc check AND help from Adobe tech to 'deep clean' Adobe software from my laptop, the laptop ran relatively normally for a few shutdown/boots.

However, then began a problem where the laptop would power on, indicate the power light, then the LAN light but the HDD light would not flash for around 5-10 minutes. During this time the Samsung loading wheel.cog is not present. After this, the HDD light switches on, the cog starts turning and the laptop would boot normally. Similarly, in shutdown, the laptop HDD light would switch off but it would take up to 20 minutes for the laptop LAN and Power light to switch off. I checked the boot order and the default is to boot from harddrive anyway (I thought perhaps laptop was strangely booting from LAN)

Last Monday (25th Feb), I updated to Windows 8.1. For two days the laptop worked perfectly normally - booted very fast (within ten seconds) and shutdown normally too. However, the boot (no hdd light) and shutdown problem resumed but was consistent in that it was just taking two mins or so to both boot and shutdown. Yesterday, however, having put the laptop on sleep during work, when I opened the lid again, I received a Power Drive State Error. And this has been the case since. However, I changed power settings to 'never' sleep or hibernate. For the next few hours the laptop switched on/off normally.

But then last night the problem got much worse. The laptop Power light and LAN light would stay on even AFTER the fan stopped spinning (previously, the fan would stop spinning with the eventual shutdown). After ten minutes of silence, the fan would spin at top speed and the laptop would power off. On boot, the laptop would spend time doing system repairs before eventually booting (ten minutes).

This morning I disabled 'fast startup' and also did a full shutdown by creating a shortcut (having learnt that Windows 8 and 8.1 always do hybrid shutdowns). Since then, the shut down has been fast (Actually clicking the shortcut itself doesn't shut down, a command screen flashes then disappears, but the shut down is fine once i Alt4 then Shutdown). The boot however still takes up to 5 minutes. Difference being that whereas before there would no HDD light and no Samsung wheel turning, now the wheel does turn. Then eventually HDD light switches on and the laptop boots. The sleep issue is still a problem where I enter sleep mode via power, and then on switching back on i get BSOD.

The laptop runs relatively stable. I really am perplexed so help would be much, much appreciated. I use this computer for making music so I am very, very weary of doing a restore (even though i have system image backup).

Uninstall AVG, then use the removal tool for it too. Set Windows Firewall and Windows Defender to Automatic and start them too.

Then update this storage driver from Intel.com:

Enjoy.

Many thanks Master Chief! I will get on that shortly. Could you explain what it is with AVG that does this? Esp as it's such a recent problem. Also could you please clarify where I would find the removal tool?

No.

You could either fix the machine or not. Best of luck.

Google can help. You're welcome.

Hi Master Chief. I have been failing to remove the AVG toolbar. When I uninstall AVG 2014, it fails with a prompt saying 'could not uninstall toolbar.' Attempting to uninstall the toolbar itself results in a message saying 'please wait until current program has finished uninstalling or being changed' but there is no activity. The toolbar itself is not visible as an extension in google chrome. I used AVG Browser Configuration tool but that has not done anything either. My system is using Malware Bytes at the moment

I dunno. You could try safe mode or command prompt to delete service(s) if that's what it is. Google can probably help again.

As far as BSODs go, it doesn't really matter much as long as you already got rid of the drivers.

If you crash more, you're welcome to post a new attachment made, after the fact - to see if all AVG drivers are gone.

There are three download options there, and I cant see where they correspond to the driver you said I needed to update. Which one to download? Sorry for the primitive questioning, this is actually as advance a problem I've ever had to troubleshoot (very very basic IT skills)

Download the 1st one shown. Extract it to a folder. Open Device Manager - devmgmt.msc <<< type in Start screen then press Enter. Right click on the Intel storage entry and then choose Update driver software. Browse my computer. Click on browse and then point it to the folder you extracted to.

Continue along installing and then reboot when done.

Machine will be very stable after, as long as you successfully removed AVG as well as we're hoping - so enjoy.

Sorry Master Chief, I cannot find the Intel Storage Entry. The only storage reference is to Windows Storage Controller. Could not find it in System Devices either. Have attached screenshot. Am I being dense?

Thank you Master Chief. AVG seems to have gone and I have installed the new driver.

I tested sleep, and it worked fine on powering up again.

I changed power back to 'quick start'

Shut down was fine. On booting, as soon as the lights switched on, all power was lost and the laptop switched off. I then booted again and it took around 3 minutes to reach desktop (30 secs Samsung screen with turning wheel & then black screen with no activity, but all lights on).

I retried shutdown, which was fine (around 20 secs). Pushed power to switch on, and again, as soon as lights switched on, the laptop switched off. Then I pushed power again, there was no power loss and it took around 3 minutes to get to desktop.

I disabled 'quick start'. Shutdown was fine. Then laptop booted fine without any power loss, and took around a minute to get to desktop.

There has not been any event of power/LAN light being on, but no HDD light activity. Just a little perplexed about why it would lose power twice there + the relatively slow boot time.

I have attached another zipfile for your attention should you need it.

I am so sorry, I had zipped the folder from earlier in the day. I have attached the zip for what I just did now. It's coming to 2am so it's best I leave it here for tonight. If I have made any mistakes I will come back to this tomorrow with a more IT savvy friend helping.

On booting the laptop again, there was a little delay with the HDD light coming back on. but then shut down was fine again/ and then booted back fine (around 1 min)

Many thanks for your help thus far Master Chief.

Good, good. Things are looking well now. There won't be any more crashes - but if in the extremely unlikely chance one does, feel free to let me know.

Just noticed two more things - Give Synaptics an update:

Drivers ? Synaptics

and update Realtek card reader driver from Realtek's website:

Morning Master Chief,

Actually did this with a more IT proficient person to avoid any mishaps. Downloaded Windows 8/7/XP/Vista 64/32-bit Edition v17.0.19 but installation would not work saying a version is already installed/setup could not finish. Uninstalled the drive in device manager. System restarted. Attempted 'setup' again but got same prompt saying drivers are already installed and then setup could be completed.

Re: Realtek card reader driver, I can't find which driver to update? Especially, as the realtek page instructs to uninstall the driver first.

Many thanks
