Facts:
1. Computer evidently malfunctioned during a windows update
2. Turn on computer, goes to HP blue screen and "thinking wheel", then black screen (never gets to login screen)
3. Have troubleshooted with HP on the phone
4. Ordered Restore cd.
5. Trying to recover files on hard drive before cd arrives.
6. HP walked me through seeing if the hard drive was damaged etc, PASSED test
7. I used IDE SATA cable and power supply to attempt to copy files to a working computer. The USB drive never showed up in "Computer" (such as c: drive or d: drive)
8. Read up on the situation, and was also told by HP that there is a corruption evidently and they are not sure if I have lost the files.
9. Evidently after reading several posts, I have concluded that I may need to create a partition on the hard drive.
10. HOW DO I DO THIS? or what would you suggest? I also tested the cables on another computer's hard drive to make sure the cables were not the problem, and the drive did appear for the other hard drive of a working computer.

Thank you for your help!
;)

It would be worth a shot to get Partition Wizard ISO. It's free and you make a boot cd or usb from the iso file. Boot it and see if it can repair the damaged partition table. I would not try to create a partition yet since this may overwrite the info used for the fix.

Another reason to get the ISO is it has all the features enabled even though it is free. It's at the bottom of the download page marked Bootable CD Free download Magic Partition Manager Software, partition magic alternative, free partition magic, partition magic Windows 7 and server partition software - Partition Wizard Online

hi, and welcome to eight forums ,you could use a live Linux to recovery files to a usb device ,it will be a learning curve if you never used Linux before .check this link for more details ..good luck

https://www.google.ca/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=HDjQUuzpOOaM8Qem5YH4Bw#q=using+linux+to+recover+windows+files

Caperjack, I guess I may have messed up.... I went to another desktop, and attempted to download ubuntu 12.04 after watching a youtube video "on how easy it would be" to get to my files. Now I would like to abandon that idea as far as ubuntu, but I can't get it to stop downloading and worse yet, I clicked the download more than once, so it is trying to sloooowwwllly download 3 copies! (I can't remember how large the file is but it seemed like it was 30MB, and the download is still less than 900KB's....) I have tried everything. I restored this other working desktop back a week, I have deleted the downloading files over and over and even emptied the trash bin, and restarted the computer. I managed to get rid of one of the 3 downloading files (of the same thing!) As you can tell, I am not a computer savvy person when it comes to this stuff, but have enough knowledge I guess to get me in trouble. Help.... My plan was to burn it to a cd once it downloads, so that I can put it in the 'broke' computer to hopefully be able to get my files and save them to a USB.

If you create a new partition or repartition the drive you will almost certainly erase the files you want to recover. With that drive connected to your other PC via the SATA to USB cable open up disk management and see it that drive is listed. If it is it may be as simple as just assigning it a drive letter to the partition with your files on it. If it doesn't have a drive letter it will not show up in explorer.

The 'broke computer' is 64 bit as well as the working computer. The working computer acknowledges that the cable is hooked to it, but no files or file/drive letter appears under 'computer'. The broke computer is Windows 8 and the working computer is a Windows 7, both desktops.

64 bit or 32 bit shouldn't matter, the file system is NTFS. Windows 7 and 8 can read NTFS regardless of whether its 32 bit or 64 bit install.

As the working PC is x64, check in disk management, as the HDD may be OFFLINE.

Even if I hooked a cable to the working computers' HD and I was able to see it on my other computer (laptop) that I used to look at both hard drives? In other words, the broke computers' HD did not show up, and the other working desktops HD did show up (I am using my laptop, (a 3rd computer in this conversation)
