Shutdown Problem

Hello,

Just recently my laptop didn't shutdown properly. I have to force off it by pressing the Power button. I wonder what could cause this problem. I'm afraid if this keeps happening it could harm my computer in a way.

When I shutdown my laptop, it is in a shutting down process, the screen goes black but it didn't turn off yet, as the power button and the 3 lights on my laptop is still flashing.

The power button light is still on.
The first light is on too. Looks like a bulb icon.
The second light is not because it is not charging.
The third light is kinda blinking. The icon is like a cylinder.

It stays like there for too long so I decided to force off it but kinda not safe. Need advice/help here, thanks.

Try shutting down using the charms Settings, Power. But hold down the shift key while you click the mouse on Shutdown. That might get your hibernate file back in sync. It doesn't hurt anything and is worth a try. I shut down like that if I think I won't use my machine again that day. It may be just a rumor but I heard if you just do the hybrid sleep type shutdown all the time the Laptop can get confused. :)

Thank you for the tip, I'll try that. Do I keep holding the Shift key until the laptop shutdown or what?

To shutdown to a full power off state,
press and hold the shift key then click on shutdown. You should not have to keep holding till the computer is turned off.

You can use a few over methods for example making a shortcut:

Also the way I always shutdown because I am a PowerShell Junkie I use within a Powershell console: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/12624-windows-powershell-open-windows-8-a.html

Code:
stop-computer

Cheers,
Harry

I usually count to 4 Mississippi in my head while holding it down. I don't know if it helps. It's just superstition. But it does make sure it was down during the click. :)

Lol ok, thanks guys.

I did make a research about it though, about the Shift thing. For Windows 8 apparently its something about Charm>Settings>Power>Hold Shift>Restart then a window will appear, finally Turn off your PC options. Will try it later when I finished using for the day.

Also if you hold down shift when clicking Shutdown it does a shutdown instead of sleep/hybrid. When you start the machine next time it takes a bit longer to come up.
