Windows 8/8.1 on old laptop

I had an old laptop - a HP COMPAQ NC6220 - which was operating with Windows XP and I was stuck with problem of XP support disappearing.

The graphics card/chip was an Intel 915GM and preliminary research suggested that it would not support Windows 8 so I was about to upgrade to Windows 7.

However, I decided to attempt a Windows 8 installation and to my surprise and delight, this has worked very well so far. The laptop runs some Office 2003 products and some Windows-based software but so far it is working perfectly.

Having installed Windows 8.1. it boots directly to the Desktop and avoids the new(ish) Metro interface.

Admittedly, there are a few yellow ? in the Device Manager window, but this does not seem to affect the PC in any noticeable way.

The laptop internal WiFi, USB port, Ethernet port all work normally.

Following from this, I would suggest that upgrading an old XP machine to Windows 8/8.1 is not an option to be ignored.

:D

This would not work on an 11 year old Satellite laptop that I took off of my dad's hands. It will only do 512mb RAM, and is very slow even with XP SP3. Now of course there is always Linux distro's like Puppy Linux, that will run on some of this older hardware, that is still going strong.
