Hi ZeroInfinity, welcome to Windows 8 Forums!

Definitely! It's free!
I'm workin on the rest of the reasons. Trust me, we tear it apart every day!

Seriously though, you'll have some great opinions coming your way shortly. (and maybe some not so great!) :)

When Windows 9 comes out, one might be required to already have 8.1 installed.
Or not.
Time will tell. :)

It was necessary to go with 8.1 to get this to work.

I've just read on the internet ( Windows 8.1 ) it's launching in April 2014, also included I E update, 11.0.3
My question is.. " Should I wait until the full version is launched ??? .. I have 64 bit on my machine.
I can't deal with a lot of trouble trying to get it to work correctly. I'd rather wait for a stable version.

I didn't know any of this & was advised by some with computer knowledge to do the 8.1 upgrade though I think false information put fear into me. Can't say how many times I was told the 8.1 upgrade was full of bugs [beta version?] & that the app's would sometimes malfunction etc. I also didn't know that once you choose the upgrade, you can't downgrade (no reversing). Overall I'm not tech savvy but I'm not computer illiterate...but when I got my new system & first tried navigating Windows 8 I felt like a ditz.
Personally, I find app's annoying...I don't really see the utility in them, they don't purpose me at all, & some (like the facebook app) are purposeless because you have to consent to permissions for the app to access your DNS server & network client, other protocols & personal information...it has access to CHANGE your OS functions; these types of consents VARY from app to app.

I went through my Windows start-up stuff & pretty much DECLINED to consent to MOST of the app's using locator information or any other "meta data" on me, my usage...any tracking or net-tagging of activities. I'm not trying to be a paranoid but it freaks me out...I do not want my internet movements splayed all over just to have some app function. I find the app's redundant...I wanted my computer for multi-media, webbrowsing, Skype (when I figure out how to use it...then I can skype friends) but primary home PC internet functions, listening to music, watching videos; sending & receiving files...word processing. That's all I ever do...& some online shopping :what:Yvonne

:ditto: on others...the 8.1 upgrade versus staying with Windows 8; it's not bad or good...it's all about personal choice. I do agree with David Bailey, I have a feeling (how upgrades go) that it will be a pre-requisite to any subsequent upgrades....as Windows 8 is lesser than 8.1, so slightly doubtful a build from a lesser grade foundation will be feasible. I went with the 8.1 upgrade [there's a scan available to check your system drivers if they're compatible to accept the 8.1 upgrade]....after the scan it said I was ok (I don't know a thing about the difference between an RT version of my system or the other kind...whichever one where your like 'hardbased'; unable to upgrade to a more recent OS)...I went with it...I'm upgraded, idk if my recent app malfunctions are from that (purported that 8.1 is unstable)...I saw alot of posts indicating the upgrade is unstable & app's can intermittently malfunction. Again, what I don't know I find out about, if i don't use it I don't bother spending time trying to troubleshoot it unless it affects some other sector I'm using.

8.1 is stable, but you'll need drivers for it. Just like when you upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, you now need the windows 7 drivers to replace the old ones.

If your computer manufacturer doesn't provide 8.1 drivers, then stay with 8. Otherwise, the upgrade is very much worth it. If nothing else, it simplifies 8 and makes it easier to understand and use.

I actually enjoy the apps. Not only do I have programs installed that I want, but I can look through free apps and find useful stuff, like Backgrounds in HD that provide gorgeous photos for my job and for my computer wallpaper. Fitness apps for working out at home. IHeartRadio because I enjoy listening to the radio, weather app, and the list goes on. Some of these things can be displayed on the lock screen, so you can know the weather for example, without even logging on. Necessary? No. Worth it? Heck Yes!

I enjoy that the apps tell you what info and locations are being accessed. Much better than the programs that don't tell you (chrome *cough cough*).

If you like 8.0 and actually use some Metro Apps I'd upgrade to 8.1. The Snap feature is much improved especially for multiple monitor setups like mine.

Dusty hello Thank You.. I have a Windows 8.1 update sitting in my updates from MSN auto updates. I wasn't sure so I hide it there.
I'm really liking W8 , except for the tiles, I made a regular home page ( desktop ) for myself from the beginning.
We're getting along just fine from there.
Hope you have a great weekend.

Thanks! Also, I think I see what you mean by windows 8.1:
There are 2 different updates. 8.1, and then there is a different 8.1 update one. 8.1 is stable, but you'll need drivers. It also may help with your app problem. 8.1 UPDATE ONE is not stable and hasn't even been released. So you could comfortably update to the 8.1, and have no fear because no one will try to get you to install 8.1 update one before it is officially released.

[DEL]Windows 8.1 update one is what they are calling windows 9 before it has been released[/DEL]* :)
*EDIT* read subsequent posts below

Update 1 is not the pre release version of Windows 9. That's not my understanding anyway. It's just a further refinement of the 8.1 update. 8.1.1 if you like.

Update 1 is not the pre release version of Windows 9. That's not my understanding anyway. It's just a further refinement of the 8.1 update. 8.1.1 if you like.

I think you're right. Strange how my brain started assuming these things. So it would be more like a service pack for Windows 8.1, right? Now it makes more sense that it was called 8.1 update one.

Guess I was thinking since 8.1 came after 8 (no service pack), that they were going straight to 9 (or 8.2). I read that they were doing a fast release of OSes to match apple or something, must have misunderstood. Thanks for clarifying.

I would say the update to 8.1 is totally worth it. Aside from all the extra goodies it brings along with it, Windows 8.1 builds a framework for more updates in the future. If you continue to use Windows 8 you'll find it necessary to have as the Operating System matures with more fixes and features.
