right-click options menu, open edit print missing.

So recently I was switching my desktop background repeatedly, trying out a few images because i wanted to change it. I had been using the right click menu on images, using the available option to 'set as desktop background'. Then, for no apparent reason that option dissapeared, along with the bolded 'open', 'edit', and 'print' options. not only that, but it seems to have slightly rearranged the menu as well as added a few new 'options' that do absolutely nothing when i try to use them.

preview, rotate right, and rotate left do nothing whatsoever. Open would have opened it in an image viewer i downloaded and set to default, and edit would have opened it in Paint. Images aren't the only things affected. it seems to have happened to .txt files and video files, except the preview and rotate options don't appear.

I can still double click to open these files in their default programs, and use the newly bolded 'open with' drop-down menu to open image sin paint, but it would be nice to have my normal options back.

So, can anyone help with this? I've done search after search, and found nothing addressing this particular problem.

Hello thewindmillman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

As a test, set the image file to have Windows Photo Viewer as it's default program to see if that restores the context menu items.

I'm thinking that when you made the 3rd party program the default program, it removed them.

Hope this helps, :)

Thanks for the idea, but it didn't restore anything. It did however, let me find out that windows photo viewer allows me to set things I open in it as my background, so there's that I guess. I've had the 3rd party program as default since I got the computer, as I was irritated by windows 8's default photo viewer being a separate 'tile', so it's been fine for nearly 1 1/2 months. Also, it's a laptop, if that would have anything to do with it.

Since double click still opens to view files in their set default, and I can use the windows viewer as a workaround for the set as background thing, they only real issue left is getting the edit option back and functional. It's already irritating me to no end, having to expand the 'open with' menu and select paint. (also, i found that there isn't even an 'open with' thing for batch files, I have to rename them to .txt files to edit them without opening notepad and finding the file in question)

You could try installing Irfanview

It has an "images only" button for file associations. Also it has some image editing capabilities. It too has Set as Wallpaper. I recommend getting the plugins as well. The program is free. I've used it for years across many Windows versions. If it doesn't fix the context menu it's not a total loss since it's a good tool to have in its own right.

I'll second that suggestion!

Irfanview is the only free editor I've found that actually does "batch image cropping."
