Hi

Windows 8 Forum

I Have a problem with my HP NV6-1126SA Laptop which came with Windows 8. I have done a windows 8 update which has caused my screen to become very dim. I have tried
  • The basic adjusting setups for example the FN and brightness key which does not work.
  • The lower right corner adjust which are on full and still no effect on the screens brightness.
  • Scanned with Anti-MalwareBytes and removed the two trojans
  • The SFC Scan had repaired some of the errors except the brightness of the screen.
  • Disk Check found no errors

I have recently used your removal tool to remove McAfee from my laptop and manually removed Norton Internet Security. I do have Windows Defender on there.

I was wondering if i should replace Windows Defender with Microsoft Security Essential? Also I want to identify the problem with my brightness of the screen if it is software related.

Thank You :)

Hello Sunny210,

These threads might give you a helping hand:

Have a look see if it helps and get back to us.

I believe in Windows eight MSE and Windows Defender merged to make windows 8 "Windows Defender". This is confusing as it is named the same thing in Windows 7 for example. Although the Windows 8 Windows defender now encapsulates both pieces of software so should not need to install MSE.

Cheers,
Harry

Hi Harry

I have tried both ways to adjust the screen brightness but neither seem to work. In the Display Adapter properties i have tried to change it to the basic VGA adapter but it still has no effect. The AMD Radeon HD 7500G version 13.251.0.0 which is the the latest version for my driver. I tried to roll back and still had no effect on the screens brightness.

I shall keep Microsoft Defender for now if it is the same as MSE.

Thanks

Sunny

Please can you try the following:

1. press :winkey: + I
2. Click "Change PC Settings"
3. Navigate to the general tab
4. locate "Screen" and turn this off

Then try adjusting your brightness.

Hope that helps :)

Harry

According to your owner's manual, the brightness increase and decrease key functions are set at the factory and controlled by settings in your BIOS:

With that said, I doubt that any Windows adjustments will fix your issue; however, since it only started with your upgrade to Windows 8.1, you may need a BIOS update that can interact properly with your new OS. So, check with HP to see if one is available. And while you're at it, make sure you have installed the latest 8.1 drivers here:
