Solved Having a problem with my mouse freezing then unfreezing.

Windows 8.1 Pro x64

This is a significant issue and I'm having a lot of trouble finding a solution online. According most sources I look at, it seems that people are usually unable to figure out what the problem is.

I am among those people. I've tried everything that a normal user probably can try. I've checked the Device Manager, tried it with "Allow windows to turn this device off to save power" disabled for USB ports. I've tried reinstalling Windows entirely, and from different discs. All to no avail.

At this point I'm starting to suspect either my system has incompatibility with Windows 8 (my system came with 7), but Origin (my PC manufacturer) said it should be fine. It doesn't matter which USB port I put it in, the issue is still there.

The only thing I can think of now is it might be my mouse. It's an old black Dell laser mouse. But I would like to be for sure before going out and buying a new one. This seems to be a recurring issue among Windows 8 users, so I have a feeling that it may not be the mouse as much as the OS.

It often makes the sound of hardware being disconnected/reconnected as well, but not always.

Is there any way to pinpoint what the issue is?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Updated my system info in profile.

Alex

if it's a wired mouse and you have no issues with any other USB devices doing the same and it only happens when you are moving the mouse , it sounds like there is a connection break in the connecting wire somewhere that you 'hit' in a certain position.

Maybe you could borrow a spare from someone or buy a cheap replacement to see if it happens with them too.

I don't think it's the cord. It looks perfectly fine.

Need to add - This issue did not exist before upgrading to Windows 8.

It's the cable; a wire is breaking. Do yourself a favor and get a nice Logitech wireless. M510 is nice, so is M310 for something a little cheaper.

I really doubt it. I mean, any inputs that should have gone through when the freezing happens, goes through after the freezing is over. I figure if the cable had an issue, the data would be completely lost.

So, for example, if I jerk the mouse around when it's frozen, the computer will respond to all that movement and everything will happen at once when it starts responding again.

That's an important note I should have put in the original post. Inputs I do when it's "disconnected" go through after it "reconnects". The data is not lost, only delayed until it reconnects.

This leads me to believe the issue is more complicated.

That's probably even more of a reason to justify:
Maybe you could borrow a spare from someone or buy a cheap replacement to see if it happens with them too.

I mean, if you tell us a test mouse did the same thing, then we can take necessary steps to fix it.

Anyway, is that really your motherboard? It is coming up as a laptop one. Did you rig it into a desktop case?

Well I was just avoiding that because I really don't have the means to but a new anything. Being that I'm totally dependent on my dad who really does not give a damn about computers, so he'll be sure to just be irritated by the issue.

Well anyway, I guess I'll see what I can do about it. And yes, that is the laptop motherboard which is in my laptop computer (EoN 17S is just Origin's name of their laptop, which is really just a CLEVO chassis filled with whatever they put in it).

Oh ok. In your specs for computer type it says PC/Desktop. It just threw me off.

The issue is very likely your cpu being massive overclocked at 4.8 GHz from 2.5 GHz. I'm surprised it doesn't crash 20x a day like that.

That's just what Origin says it's at if you max it out. I personally have never been able to reproduce such speed. I haven't seen it go over 4.5 under load. It typically stays under 1.5 when idle. 4.8 is just it's max turbo boost. If it's ever reached that speed I'm sure it was only very momentarily.

Nevertheless, it stands out as a drastic issue, since max Turbo frequency is 3.5 GHz.

I dunno. I just trusted that the original Alienware team would know what they're doing. I don't see many complaints about it online about their products. Though, the high overclocking still, of course, draws a lot of attention when troubleshooting any issue. The issue has however, time and time again, turned out to be unrelated to OC.

Ok. You have the computer thinking a device is disconnecting and then reconnecting. That's precisely the type of behavior expected with an unreasonable overclock. Is it guaranteed fact 100% beyond doubt the cause? Can't say that, but can say it is something to pay attention to.

Other than that, another idea is in Advanced Power plan settings: USB selective suspend.

Yet another idea is to try a USB 2.0 port if you have it in a 3.

If using a hub, try without.

I'll try another mouse when I get home and we'll see. I just think it's kinda odd that all was fine and well on Win7 and as soon as I get on Win8 I have mouse problems.

So I went and bought a new, simple mouse. I went with the Razer Krait as it appears to be a cheaper, smaller, and simple mouse. Just the way I like it, I dislike mice that are bulky or have all those G-Keys.

It seems it was indeed the mouse.

By what I can collect from other forums, it seems it wasn't the cable. More, it was just a really outdated mouse and it just didn't work out well for a likely range of reasons. It probably just wasn't Windows 8 compliant (seriously, it was one of those default Dell laser mice from 2002 or something).

The mouse still works on Windows 7 systems. It's just not compatible with 8 it seems.

I can feel this new mouse will take some getting used to. But they always do, don't they?

Just curious.

Did you update all your drivers before & after updating to 8.1 ?

Especially the mouse driver ?

Everything that can be updated has been updated. I keep on top of that stuff.

The problem with that mouse is it was really an ancient and generic mouse. Drivers for it didn't seem to exist. There was no support for the mouse that I could find whatsoever.

So, basically, it was an ancient mouse - old forgotten tech, and just needed to be ditched.
