windows media player isn't showing subtitles !

hello
i just want to ask why don't subtitles appear in windows media player although i enabled it

Perhaps there is an srt file missing...???
Check in the folder that contains the video file, for an srt file.

You would need a plug-in called a VobSub plug-in for Windows Media Player, providing the video files are DivX or Xvid encoded, which they should be.
A much easier alternative would be to download and install VLC Media Player, which is a much more versatile media tool. It's free and does what you wish automatically.

VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!
Just make sure the subtitle file remains in the same folder as the video file. VLC Media Player will load the subtitles automatically from then on, even if you lose the .srt file, except if you delete VLC's preference cache, so keep the file handy in the folder.

the subtitles work well with VLC which i already have but it shows arabic subtitles as strange chars and symbols
i guessed windows media player would show it properly but it shows neither english nor arabic lyrics

Hmmm I just naturally assumed wmp played subs right out of the box. I guess I was mistaken... as I don't use it myself. Frankly, I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would.

I use Media player classic as well as vlc from time to time.
Perhaps give mpc a try...

Use VLC, it always adds the Subs automatically.

Even with Media Player, try renaming the Subtitle File to the exact same name as the Media File - Then it should load automatically in WMP and VLC.

Does WMP have a setting to play Subs automatically? Turn that on, rename the Sub file, then it should load when you play the Vid.

    Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.

thanks for your replay
i do have VLC and it show english subtitles perfectly
but arabic subtitles are shown as very strange symbols
MPHC solved my problem but i'm still curious why VLC doesn't show arabic subtitles ?
