Solved No Access to c;/ Tried all options

Helllo!

I could really use some help here. I've tried so many online solutions to this and not one of them has panned out. I was stupid and changed the access settings to my c drive and all i need to do is change them back. I have tried so many things. I would really like to avoid wiping my computer as there are some files on there that I will not get back.

What exactly are you trying to do? Please explain more.

C: should be your boot drive so I don't understand how you cannot have access.

Probably the easiest way to fix this is to do a System Restore to before you made the change.

Also, you should backup you hard drive before doing any kind of install. That way you don't lose anything.

I do believe the OP changed some permissions and now has access issues.

Yeah, I accidentally changed some permissions and I now have no access. It seems as though there is no way to fix this without resetting my PC. I won't be messing with those options ever again. Now it seems that I can't even refresh the system.

If you just locked that one user account out, you can likely create a new one and get access. If it was a global change your likely SOL. That's something I'm no expert on but I do know enough not to mess with them. You wouldn't be the first person to find out the hard way though, or the last.

Yeah, I'm afraid I did make it global. So stupid. Aby reasons why it's not letting me reset?

Need way more info than that? What did you try and what was the result? Specifically what error message are you getting etc.

I simply tried resetting my PC. Tired it in safe mode as well. Doesn't give me an error code. Just says there was a problem.

I'm not sure where you go from here. You may have to do the factory restore by pushing one of the Fn keys during boot up. What make and model of PC is it? Did it come with Windows pre installed? Do you have and recovery media or installation media for it?

I have solved the problem, using some commands like you mentioned but not precisely those. See the last post on the following page: [SOLVED] Access Denied - Fully! - Tech Support Forum

Hi, there are a number of methods to resolve this let's try the easy one first. Boot with the OS dvd in the drive (may have to set boot order in the bios).

Access the RE (recovery environment) through the "repair your computer" option. Then select command prompt. At the x sources prompt type:-

Code:

bcdedit | find "osdevice"
Using the drive letter returned (assume C) run at the x sources

C: (press enter)

At the C: prompt, type each command pressing enter after each:-


Code:

takeown /A /F C:\
takeown /A /F C:\Windows
takeown /A /F C:\Windows\System32
Close the Command Prompt, then click Restart

This should give you access to C drive, you can reset permissions then or whatever.

I am most certainly SOL. I didn't create a restore point after upgrading to 8.1. Turns out when you upgrade to 8.1 you also lose your ability to do a system reset if you download it from the Windows store. I'm having to get it wiped and set back to factory by a technician. What a nightmare. This computer is only a week old.

Right, not sure if you have tried this but I have just been looking at this in a virtual machine for you and hopefully I managed to replicate and find the solution:

Firstly I deleted all the permissions to one of my users to get the error in the picture attached.



Then running an elevated CMD prompt -
1. Ctrl + X
2. Ctrl + A

Then run this command:

icacls C:\ /grant:r TestUserOI)(CI)M /T /C

Change "TestUser" with the user you are trying to give access to your root directory. If this is successful you will see the CMD prompt processing all the files.

I'm guessing you get prompted to supply your installation media when you try to do the reset. I've seen posts that say it will reset to 8.0 and some that say no it won't work anymore. It likely has to do with how the factory sets up the factory recovery partition that contains the image of the original install. When you get it back, I'd make your recovery media first thing. It may save you if you end up in a similar situation.
