My brother brought his PC to me with the above error.
The rest of it is File: \BCD and error code 0xc0000034. And of course being my brother he did not make a recovery CD. There is also no windows twenty five digit serial number sticker on the case. So can someone direct me where to proceed from here? Thank you for any guidance....

Startup repair (up to 3x consecutive runs might be needed, but probably only 1) will fix it.

You might try your luck with "finding" a Win 8 (or 8.1 if you have that instead) .iso to burn or make a USB out of, so you get to startup repair. Check hashes if you do this, compared to known well discs or official disc.

Someone will probably have a suggestion or two how to get one. Maybe even officially.

It would be helpful to everyone if you give the exact machine model and submodel (if there is one).

You receive the following error message:

The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information.
File:\BCD
Error code: 0xc0000034

And you can't refresh or reset.

Refresh your PC: "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

Reset your PC: "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing."

How do you repair the problem.

- Boot the computer using the Windows 7/8 installation media.
- On the first screen, press SHIFT+F10 to bring up command prompt.

-or-

- Boot the computer using the Windows 8 recovery USB flash drive.
- select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.

Run the following commands at the command prompt.

diskpart
list volume NOTE: Note the volume letter where the Windows OS is installed.
exit

bcdboot X:\windows NOTE: Replace "X" with the volume letter of the Windows OS partition.

For example, bcdboot c:\windows or bcdboot d:\windows (see screenshots below).

If the drive letter is incorrect, you will receive the following error message: "Failure when attempting to copy boot files."

NeoSmart Technologies has created a great tool called Easy Recovery Essentials. It is a recovery environment designed to help in situations like this. They offer several options including a Windows 8 RE.

Check it out... https://neosmart.net/EasyRE/

Tried the Easy RE but that didn't work out. It ran through a lot of info but it's way above my pay grade. I took a picture of the screen. Maybe someone can decipher it and comment. Thanks to all who have tried to help...

"If you don't use raid, use raid=noautodetect" is likely of interest here.

I don't know that software, so I'm not sure when or where you are supposed to use that; at run time or later. ???

If you want to try to find the Windows 8.1 install .iso, Google can likely help with that: "Windows 8.1 Original ISO from Microsoft" but as always, check the download file's hash against known "good" values.

You can use this to make a USB key out of the .iso: Microsoft Store

Direct link to the .exe: http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe

Finally got it going.Downloaded 8.1 and things are back to normal now. Like learning new things but this one was difficult because I couldn't relate it back to things from previous Windows. Learn and grow. Thanks to all who replied and all your suggestions....
