Windows 8 on other laptop.

Hi,

I have a laptop on which I upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7 and I got Windows 8.1 as free upgrade respectively.

Now I am planning to buy a new laptop and it comes with Ubuntu, so my question is that can I remove Windows from my old laptop and install on new laptop and will it get activated ?

Please suggest.

You haven't provided us with enough information.

IF you bought a FULL retail version of Windows 8 (not the UPGRADE version) then you will have to
remove Windows 8 on your old laptop (by formatting it or installing another OS completely over it) and
then install Windows 8 on your new laptop. You might have to call Microsoft and explain you upgraded
your laptop. You are allowed to use a FULL RETAIL version on ONE device but it does not always have
to be the same device.

IF you bought the UPGRADE license from Windows 7 (which it sounded like you did) technically that
version of Windows 8 is licensed on the same machine the Windows 7 license was on. Especially if
Windows 7 was an OEM license. There is some gray area IF you bought another laptop ALSO with
Windows 7, Microsoft MIGHT let you transfer the Windows 8 license from one laptop to another. Typically
this would be allowed if it is the same model laptop (you replaced it under warranty).
Again, Windows 8 can only be on one device. Since it sounds like you do not have Windows
7 on your new laptop, this would not be the case for you.

These are the legal avenues you have.

Hi,

Yes I upgraded not bought full. But there's also one thing that my old laptop on which I am running the upgrade had pirated version of Windows 7, then i upgraded to genuine Windows 8 and got free upgrade of Windows 8.1 respectively. So can I still transfer Windows 8 to new laptop ?

We are speaking legal here. Which is what the forum leaders want.

You can get a pirated version of Windows 8 and put it on anything you want for that matter.

Basically, you illegally obtained your Windows 8 license. Does that mean the license is bad in Microsoft's eyes?
No, unless you call them and confess and give them your license number.

Your Windows 8 is an upgrade license. It's linked to your (pirated) Windows 7 license. More times than not you
cannot transfer an upgrade license from one machine to a totally different machine.

All you can do it try it. If you can do it, then fine. If MS catches wind, you might be able to do it now
but the next time you go to install it might not let you. You still might find you need to call Microsoft and
plead your case.

Hi,

Ya I contacted MS and they said that I cannot. Hence I got a laptop which has Windows 8 preintsalled. They also gave me a coupon code which reduced the cost of machine so I got Windows 8 like for free with the new laptop.
