Hi there. i've had this problem since i first install windows 8. i ignored it and its really bugging me now since i need to open boot screen to turn on the system. Everytime i tried to turn it on, it turns into a black screen with only my pointer showing.

I've tried following existing 'solutions' by googling it. I've done the /scannow and it shows that theres nothing wrong. i tried to diagnose with the repair thing and it leads me to my next problem. it says i got the srt/srttrail.txt problems. and i cant automatically fix it. after another round of google and 'solutions'. i tried to do a refresh, yet i cant since my computer keeps saying that the media inserted is not valid.

is there any other way for me to fix this problem without going to the store (which i doubt will help) or start a fresh install?i really dont want to lose all of my files and i dont want to go to the torture of installing windows 8 again (i had lots of rare problems installing it too)

Oh and some additional problems. everytime i tried to do a WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab
it tells me that Problems installing recent updates is Not Fixed all the time. and Check for missing or corrupt files is detected but nothing is done.

Have you tried the dism command in administrator command prompt ?

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Screenshot (32).png

I assume you have access to a command prompt since you said you ran sfc /scannow.

If so & you have restore points made you could try typing in rstrui.exe to get system restore to pop up & restore to a point before the present issue started.

I bought the physical version of windows 8 pro at my local store. I think its 100% genuine since the codes work and all. I later then upgraded it to 8.1 from the store.

The OTA Update seems to have caused quite a bit of errors like this, Davids DISM command is a good fix, and its a good point about using real drivers from the makers of the hardware, not from MS.

How many monitors? Which connection type(s)? (Just curious is all.)

What do you mean by this? "i need to open boot screen to turn on the system." You mean the boot menu where you choose startup options?

You can run the tool in Brink's sticky thread
in the
BSOD subforum then post the results here, if you want. It can't hurt none.

It should be right on it, go to manufacturer's site and download all the appropriate drivers for it.

@Masterchief just 1 monitor. i'm not sure about the connection type. i think its your everyday type. I need to open boot screen, press the Exit without saving any changes. if i dont go to my boot screen first, it will go black with only the cursor available. I'm downloading the tools atm. i'll post the result after i'm finished with the steps.

@CountMike after looking at the boxes. i think its the ASRock 970 Pro 3 R2.0. (i dont really know since i let the shop guy do the picking ) any idea which one of these is the one i should download? ASRock > 970 Pro3 R2.0 or should i just download all of em?

Oooo I see. That's called "bios", not "boot screen."

Few things. Go to bios. Set it to be Optimized Defaults.

If there is a setting for Plug and Play OS, set it to yes or on after.

If there is a setting for Primary Display Adapter, set it to the PCI-E.

Save.

Boot to Windows.

Seems like they have very new drivers there. I have a habit to download everything a manufacturer offers and keep them in a folder at a safe place so I can reuse them if reinstallation of system is needed. In this case I would install all the drivers except maybe SATA RAID utility if you are not planing on RAIDing disks. Drivers are essential for the workings of hardware and can cause bunch of problems if not right.
Disks or other media that eventually comes with HW is usually pretty outdated.

There actually was a crash dump included, but was corrupt and can not be read. Shame really.

MotionJoy has got to be uninstalled.

I would do the same for AVG.

:O i didnt realize motionjoy would be the problem. I've downloaded all of your recommended files and installed them. and uninstalled the 2 programs. Although i'm not sure where to get a proprietary storage driver. I'm not sure if i've installed the chipset drivers correctly since the autodetect says that t cant detect anything.

Which motherboard?

System should be ok now already though. (Stability-wise.)

Yes, MotionJoy brings down systems all the time. Crash, thud. heh
