Solved Windows 8 Stuck at "Please Wait", will not boot in Safe Mo

Hello, a co-worker of mine has a computer that is stuck on the "Please Wait" when trying to boot in Windows 8. I have managed to get into command prompt by using Shift+F8 (after 3 tries), and ran dskchk, it returned two errors that it "corrected" but it didn't solve the problem. I also tried booting into Safe Mode in all its various forms, all of which still hang on the "Please Wait" screen.

This machine had issues in the past with Outlook causing issues when attempting to search, it would have to "re-index" the "mail file" before it could search, and then would just crash Outlook over and over again. This issue went away for a month or two, but resurfaced yesterday, and then about 5 minutes after the first Outlook crash, it crashed the machine with what I was informed was a "kernal error" that was at "21%" and then the machine just shut off.

Any ideas? Suggestions as how to fix this without reinstalling Windows? All I have access to is Command Prompt.

So I made some progress, we got it booted by doing a system restore, and so I tried to start sfc /scannow , and it failed to start, and crashed the process every time. I found out via Windows Modules Installer Error:126 - Microsoft Community how to fix that issue in the registry, which I did, and the sfc /scannow did work, up until it got past the verification step, where it then crashes again. In the log, it listed that, "Failed to ping TiWorker, looks like TiWorker crashed, re-launch it". So now that is where I am. I have the CBS.log file, and 44,000+ lines in it, and no idea how to make the sfc work properly to fix this issue. Can anyone help?

First thing to do to this machine is remove the 3rd party antivirus or security suite software with the removal tool from the maker.

Then set Windows Firewall and Windows Defender to Automatic, using services.msc.

Install Malwarebytes then update definitions and scan.

But really, there are quite a lot of files that are not well in Windows, and their backups are not well to replace from either. If it was a file or two, you could manually copy from another machine with the same build number and replace over existing files on this machine, and then to the store too - but at the end of the day, really should clean install Windows or restore from the factory partition.

This is an example of what I mean, from the log: "source file in store is also corrupted" - which means there is no hope for fixing properly without extreme manual intervention. For example: Tons of manual copying.

I was afraid of that. I saw that in the log as well, but was hopeful that it was just me being discouraged from it all. Any chance before I do that, that you, or someone, can help me determine what it is that caused the issue? Because it was "out of no where". I know Windows was installing updates in the background, Outlook then took a crap and said it had to rebuild its search cache, we accepted that, and then that finished, used outlook for another 10 minutes, and then Windows threw a "gray screen that only appeared on one monitor, that said something about a kernel error, and 21%", and then the machine crashed.

EDIT: Also, there is not a current AV installed, other than Malewarebytes. I will run that this afternoon and see what it turns up to maybe find the cause.

EDIT#2: Would it be fixable if using the W8 install CD? If I was to run sfc from the CD, would that allow proper copying being as the stored copies on the HD are screwed up?

I already thought about that before you asked. It could have been dropped or banged too hardly when the hdd was on and spinning.

For real good measure (perhaps unnecessary though) - Spinrite can be used on the drive to fix it up (if any problems with it want to remain, heh). Another amazing tool is HDD Regenerator. The name sounds like snake oil but I assure you it is not. It fixes broken drives in many cases and has done so perfectly with unusable ones given to me for free.

No, there is no method that I'm aware of to make sfc run and use the DVD as its store. Very doubtful that exists, but since I do not claim to know everything, possible I suppose. I really don't think so.

You are saying to use those tools after a reinstall of windows, right? I don't believe the issue was a damaged HD, at least not from force, because it was on and running when the issues occurred, and this was after a full days use. We work in a fairly small office, I would have heard my co-worker kicking it if that was the case. ;)

As far as running it from the disk, I think it is doable, using something like sfc /scannow /offbootdir=d:\ /offwindir=c:\windows

Where d is the disk drive and c is the HD. I will be giving it a shot later today, and will report back on how it goes.

Awesome. Yeah, before, I checked on sfc with the /? switch and saw offwindir and offbootdir but couldn't advise about it since I never used it before.

Sounds like a plan to try. Best of luck.

I wonder if that does actually work, will it also replace files in the store (C:\Windows\winsxs) where sfc normally fixes from. Also, Windows Updates to consider too...if it replaced files.

Well it turns out that you cannot do what I wanted, it did not run when trying to do it from the CD.

However, with a bit more looking around, I came across this thread, which worked perfectly. It corrects the store files, which then allowed sfc /scannow to run correctly, and fix all the issues in the Windows install. I restart, and re-ran sfc, and it returned 0 errors now, so, problem solved!

Thanks a bunch for all your help MasterChief.
