Ok so stupidly I put a few personal type files in the Windows.old folder when I was running Windows 8. I just upgraded from 8 to 8.1 and completely forgot about the personal files I placed in the folder before I upgraded. Of course a day or two after I upgraded I went to find them and they were no longer there. Is there anyway to get these files back from the old Windows.old folder? Can I do a restore to a week ago when I was still at Windows 8?

Since you already had a C:\Windows.old folder before you upgraded, you might check to see if there may be a C:\Windows.old.000folder with a number at the end that would be the old C:\Windows.old folder before the upgrade.
In addition, check for a C:\$Windows.~BT folder that may also contain some files from your previous installation.
