Crash in sleep mode, WinDbg points to wireless adapter?

(PREVIOUSLY POSTED THIS IN THE WRONG FORUM)

This issue has been ongoing for months, ever since I purchased the computer in November. Microsoft basically abandoned my issue and I personally have not been able to solve it myself.

I am using an ASUS K55N laptop, equipped with an AMD A8-4500M APU, 4GB single-channel RAM, and of course, Windows 8 standard x64.

Occasionally, anywhere from an hour to three days after a boot-up, the computer will hang while in sleep mode (screen will be off but indicator lights will remain on for about 5 minutes in sleep mode) and shut off. Upon restarting, I'll be greeted by a "Your PC ran into a problem and had to restart" Windows prompt. Of course, a minidump will also be produced. However, there is no BSOD anywhere to be found.

Upon looking into these dump files with WinDbg, all of them point toward my Atheros AR9485 wireless card's driver; either athw8x.sys or athrx.sys depending on the driver I was using at the time. I have tried several Atheros drivers, to no avail. I have tried using new drivers, old drivers, Windows 7 drivers, you name it. At this moment, I am using a Windows 7 driver. Yet, it has not solved the issue.

Verifier is disabled, although I believe my issue can be attributed to debugging. I have literally tried everything and it persists. Please help me with my issue.

Attached are my SF diagnostics tool logs.

Update athrx from ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows (Atheros?????)

Update this if at all possible from manufacturer: Driver Reference Table - ASMMAP64.sys

Your problem likely lies with these drivers/dlls:

Uninstalling the owner software is very much the recommendation. Update instead if you need it. If there is no update, uninstall temp. to test and then make your decisions from there.

I've seen the issue before and it is extremely rare, from National Instruments.

Thank you for your reply. However, I have tried many times before to update the drivers and it did not solve my issue. Asus does not have an update for ASMMAP64.sys either. Also, the problem preceded my installation of the National Instruments software.

You're welcome.

I did not see any 3rd party firewall drivers, or exotic network drivers, or virtualization software, but if I missed any, then the problem very much could be with one of those. Uninstall to test.

I still say NI is your issue, regardless of when you remember issues starting. I still recommend removing it to test in case my previous paragraph is not the answer.

Best of luck. :)

Another good thing to do is to use CPU-Z to compare the Memory and SPD tabs. Make sure memory is set well as SPD tab says it should be. Also, make sure no mismatched memory sticks (you probably don't have that though.)

If you're still stuck with no resolution after all of that, uninstall ScpVBus.sys for the PS3 controller. That's also a known problem.

I am removing the NI software. I will see if it has resolved the issue. Thank you.
Also thank you for those additions. I have deleted the PS3 controller driver. I am using single-channel RAM so I believe my memory is good.

It may take a day or so for the crash to appear. No problems yet.

Keeping fingers crossed for ya. If issues still show, we will get to the bottom of it one way or another, I assure you.

But hopefully we have fixed it already. I think so.

If it all remains good, I would do this:

1) Reinstall PS3 controller driver. Wait 2 days. Maybe crash, maybe not. If no issues, then -

2) Reinstall NI software. Probably will crash again but then at least you'll know.

Well, it crashed again. It lasted about 2 days. Oh well. Did not reinstall either driver.

I think I may just reinstall Windows. The issue, however, is that I do not have a disk to reset/reinstall Windows with

Let's see the new crash dumps, if possible, to see the state of the machine as it stands. That's the way to go, IMHO, for now.

A large percentage of the time, faulty drivers are unintentionally left on the machine in cases like this, and active. Greater than 60-70% of the time, I'd even venture to say.

I don't know how in the world I missed this (I think you just added it???) - but AVG needs to be removed.

Your network adapter is still experiencing issues and crashing. AVG is quite well known and good to do that.

Recommend using only Windows Defender service and Windows Firewall service until things are straight, or permanently.

All of the NI drivers are unfortunately still present and active, as I suspected above:

Sine those NI drivers are numerous, it is quite tedious to delete them manually AND THEN go to the registry to delete the corresponding key for each, but it can be done. The key for each would be at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services

Best to try again to uninstall it normally and resort to manually as shown, if needed.

They should all be in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\

In any case, don't forget to reboot after deleting + making registry edits.

I've disabled AVG. On a side note, I've reinstalled a new version of the NI development software for my occupation and I'll see if it works.

Good, good.

Maybe it will behave now for ya.

First thing to do if not is to uninstall AVG, since the drivers are still active without that.

And that is going to have to be gone to troubleshoot further.

Basically, the idea is to get the machine to where everything on it is known to be well and perfect, without exception, 100% golden seal of approval. No machine with AVG or any other 3rd party antivirus can claim that.

Would be nice if the NI update fixed it. Time will tell.

I went into my BIOS and disabled "Power Off Energy Saving;" which is an Asus thing. I've read that it causes crashes often. Lets see if that solves the issue.

Unless something else has changed on the machine that I'm unaware of, I think it all reverts back to NI software (any version) being on the machine or not.

Almost guaranteed with it completely removed that you will not see another bsod again.

I know you need it, but that fact doesn't change the software into something that behaves well.

For as rare as it is, I've seen it often enough. Over the years, their own forum has been filled with bsod complaints.
