How can I dim Modern/Metro apps, making them even darker?

This would really help me with reading at night. There are plenty of screen dimming utilities, but they don't carry over into Modern, only dimming the desktop. I was wondering if there's a way to dim the entire UI, maybe as a default option.

If you like, your display brightness settings would affect both the desktop and modern UI in Windows 8.

The brightness on my Dell Venue 8 Pro is controlled by opening the Charm Bar, clicking on Settings, then clicking on Screen. A brightness slider pops up.

On my Desktop computer, the screen icon is grayed out, and the controls on the monitor are used, but that was a one time setup.

I'm not just talking about the default screen brightness. I want to dim the device until it's very dark, darker than normal. This helps with reading at night. Bright white text on a black background is very jarring, and there's no way to change it to a darker gray in the app.
