Windows Media Player 12 - Video Lagging as HD

Hello, my name is Benjamin123. I am having problems with my Windows Media Player 12 on my Windows 8.1 Enterprise PC, when I publish a video from my JVC Everio HD Camcorder (Model NO.: GZ-HM300SEK).
Every time I click to play a video and when I skip the video along.. the image freezes for 2 seconds and it continues with a stutter. I am guessing that the PC doesn't handle a bit of HD specs (if I am right).

Thank you for reading!

Regards,
~Benjamin123

You just got a very good suggestion try downloading VLC media player from the link that the gentleman posted.

I understand what your system is doing however, regardless of how fast a system is or how much RAM is in there or how fast a CPU is, whenever you try to play an HD video at a resolution higher then 1080p, or at 1080p for that matter it will do exactly as you described.

That is because Windows media player is overloaded with crap that uses up extra resources. VideoLAN on the other hand, is a lot more powerful player and it uses up a lot less resources and has overall a much smaller footprint on the computer than Windows media player has. So it can play videos without stalling as much. Note, "as much", because sometimes your hard drive has developed fragmentation despite your best efforts and maybe you are playing a video that is on your system drive. A good idea is to not save videos on your system drive, find another partition or use an external drive, The faster the interface the better.

For starters set up a daily schedule or defragmentation using your disk optimizer in Windows 8. You will not see much improvement until about a week has gone by, by that time your free space fragmentation will be down to about 0.2 and your file fragmentation should be about zero. But it takes optimizing every night say between midnight and 6 o'clock in the morning allotting about six hours for defragmentation and/or optimizing. Windows 8.1 should detect if you have an SSD drive and it will do the appropriate optimization.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
My PC has already installed VLC Player a couple of months ago, but I don't like when videos have tiny stuttering on VLC player. So, I use WMP with the downloadable codec pack, but I have a seeking problem when I run my new HD video on WMP.

You could try Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. It's a very lightweight media player, low on cpu/resource usage and with much more options than wmp 12, and better support for hardware acceleration which should help you (options > internal filters > video decoder > hardware decoder to use).

I usually install it as part of CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack, which includes a lot of codecs and open source media splitter, but it can be installed alone.

I have installed the Codec Pack, it still not make a difference. The seeking on the HD video is the issue (dragging the timeline bead along freezes the player up).

sounds like it might be you video controller or graphics card drivers you don't list in you specs what you are using ,you don't list the system manufacture and model# of the computer ,im thinking win8.1 enterprise might not be for your machine

The HD videos that I am watching now, is getting smoother and better seeking - but thanks anyway. I still need to listen to this thread if I have the problem again.

Oh Yes, MPC-HC, if you do download a codec pack for it, and there are only a couple of bonafide packs you can get, you MUST confiure it in the MPC-HC settings, MPC-HC does nto automatically set those up.

You have to look around in Prefs, the codec packs will have a whole section for config.

But the way you explain VLC behaving, is indicative of something seriously hosed on your system. You may have way too many programs competing for resources, especially if you have Norton or McAfee running. Go into Task Manager and disable as many startup programs as you can, and when you watch a movie, wither shut off Mcafee/Norton completely or shut off the Real Time Protection.

I don;t run an AV on my Media System which uses VLC Only, and I don't download anything to that system or use it for the web at all. The Program never stutters and it is as if I am watching it on HBO.

Basically, if you want to use any particular PC to watch Videos, you cannot use it for any other purposes, no downloading, no Browsing.

Windows Media Player will never match how good VLC runs, no matter what you do, the quality is just not there, and all of the codec packs in the world (and you should be very careful which ones you get) cannot help it.

There is a codec pack that is distro with MPC-HC, it is the only valid codec pack there is and it is rigged to allow playing Disney Protected Media.
