I have HP Pavilion G6 laptop running Windows 8.1 which I'm unable to start-up in safe mode. I've pressed all the usual keys (F5, F8 etc.) but nothing always goes to metro. How does one start Windows 8 in safe mode?? Does the facility exist still?

Xunile.....thanks for link to video clip. Useful but only covers getting into safe mode when already in normal mode. It gives a simple solution when in normal mode which is before selecting restart, just hold down shift key. This brings up restart options menu's.

What I'm looking for is to start-up in safe mode from a cold boot/shut down scenario. I've tried F8 when fast boot is on as well as off and tried, again with both scenario's, holding the shift key down as I press the power on button. NO safe mode or other options just boots to metro interface.

I find this disconcerting since if you have, say, driver issues that (under older OS's) means you can't start (and get BSOD). Normally restart using F8 gets you to boot options screen

Try:

WinAero: Boot UI Tuner

When boot options appear, choose one or not.
If not, press Enter to continue booting or the computer won't boot.

Choose the right version after unzipping:

If you have multiple OSes installed, it's much easier. The boot menu lists your OSes, including the default, and will start it in seconds if you do nothing - but if you move the mouse, the timer stops, and it lets you choose one of the OSes, or other options - and if you go down the tree there, troubleshoot, advanced options, startup settings, you'll reach a list menu that displays Safe Mode and the other options previously found under F8.

David...........Thanks. Tuner downloaded, installed and working OK. Pity a) Microsoft didn't put settings page accessible via function key b) this tuner app likewise and c) that timer before boot to metro not included. Nevertheless, very useful. Thanks again
