Solved How to add "play with Media Center" to DVD drive in W. exp

First time here and posting, but this site often comes up near the in Googling for help, and I (and MS support) would appreciate your knowledge here.

On my PC there is no "play with" or "Send to" menu for the optical drive in my PC under W/8.1, though it recognizes the DVD in it, and both VLC player and Jet Audio have added themselves to the right click menu.

I can play the DVD using Windows Media Center (C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe) if i launch it first, but would like to add it to a play with menu, or even have a send to menu for that drive.

Believe it or not, MS tech support ( 1-800-642-7676) has spent hours (free so far) in 3 different remote sessions trying to do this, the first of other issues i called about, and is due to call again (then they go to remote) at 5.30, but as this should not be the hard, i thought you all would know how to do it. (You can then send them the bill!)

I have search regedit for "Play with," "media center," "ehshell.exe," and can see that VLC player added a Open key to play with VLC player and a command subkey pointing to the app, but have found nothing that i could figure out how to do the same for "media center," "ehshell.exe."

Note that this is not a big deal as i can play the DVD by launching the Media Center first (which i put a shortcut to in My Computer by using RightClick Extender), but apparently MS forgot to add a "play wit"h menu to the optical drive. Other players play DVDs, but WMP in W/8/1 does not play DVDs by default, due to not wanting to pay the $ for the license, and i do want to be legal, so you have to buy the $10 Media Center (which i got for free during the early promo period).

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm not quite sure I understand what your looking for. However, you can set AutoPlay in Windows 8 to launch Media Center when a cd or dvd is detected.

The tech tried that: it does not work. Clicking on the DVD drive in Widows Explorer, or r. clicking and choosing "open," results in: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

The tech even tried doing this in the Registry.

Yet I actually do not want media center to autoplay it, as i want to be able to right click the drive and choose "play with media center" (as an option) or have a Send to option whereby i can do the same.

However, maybe this eightforums fix will enable me to do what you suggest.

Excellent find, this will come in handy some day.

I have found Eightforums has many of those nifty and needed fixes or helpful tweaks (thank God for whoever is doing such work!), but i am still looking for an "open with" or "Send to" right click option.

Download the attachment, double click to install it.

This should add the option to open with Media Center.

Since I don't have Media Center to test this I'm not sure if it will play the DVD or just open the program.

Edit: **Updated to add playback functionality

Thanks to PBY777 & MS Tech Support.

Could the keys be missing in the registry?

CONFIRMED: It works! Add to the growing collection of fixes/tweaks. Thanks again.

I see the script is
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\Media Center]
@="Open with Media Center"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\Media Center\command]
@="\"C:\\Windows\\ehome\\ehshell.exe\""

I actually unexpectedly had to go out for a few hours so i missed the MS tech support call, but will point him here. The original tech actually has escalated the case. Thank God there are such options as this community. They really help us to fix or tweak Windows.

One thing i just noticed though, is that if i send a .vob (mpeg2) file within the DVD to Media Center (using Send to, as there is no Media Center option to the right click menu on .vob files), yet it will not play it. VLC player will.

That's the odd thing, for WMC can play the DVD, thus it can play .vob files, but will not do so individually.

Update. MS support got back to me and i showed him your fix (hope he appreciated it). He said that he and the techs had been looking into it (which is what he said last time). He then spent a few more minutes trying to get WMC to actually play the DVD directly, rather than launching it via "open with" and then choosing Play DVD. After a few failures he found adding /directmedia:discplayback" to your command worked, so that in full it is C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe" /directmedia:discplayback.

Yet despite its name, it still cannot play .vob files directly, or .ogg (VLC would not play this one either: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0e/Handel_-_messiah_-_43_thou_shalt_break_them.ogg, but JetAudio would).

Thanks again and may God bless.
