Hi Stefelz,

why would you use a dynamic disk? You do not need this.

strange,

i did not have that problem installing Win8

Dynamic disks are slower, although some say faster, and give more problems.....have been there.

That will not work. If you want to create a new simple extended partition, you must only have a maximum of 3 primary partitions. So the win8 partition has to go, the win7 partition can be converted into a logical partition and then you have to reconvert the remaining dynamics into primaries.

The only free program I know that can do that is Partition Wizard bootable CD version 4.2 - the later free releases do not deal with dynamics, you would need the pro version.

As far as I can see those are your choices:
1. Convert dynamic disk to basic as whs suggested with partition wizard. You can follow this tutorial (option 4) http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2393-windows-8-vhd-create-boot-dual-boot.html

2. Trick Windows into installing into dynamic disk Devocalypse - Install Windows 7 on a Simple Dynamic Disk (Pro and Ultimate Only) (can be dangerous, so please make sure to backup!)

3. Install Windows 8 into VHD. In my opinion this is your best choice, as it is relatively easier, safer and less destructive. You can follow this tutorial: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2393-windows-8-vhd-create-boot-dual-boot.html

I hope this will help you.

Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk - Windows 7 Forums

Back up all of these partitions. open up disk management (search for it in start). You can then delete the dynamic volume and create a basic one.
I would also recommend hiding all of those useless drive letters. Change them to H,J, etc. Move your REAL drives into the C, D, E etc. You can then REMOVE the drive letters for HP tools, recovery, etc so it does not make explorer so messed up.

Duh - you're right.
I think BootItBareMetal can also do the necessary - but then I think I'd rather start again from scratch anyhow :)

For those that aren't aware, Windows Disk management can't convert a hard disk back to a Basic Disk without losing all the data in the process, so say goodbye to all your programs and documents etc. stored on that HDD and all its partitions if you go that route. (It can convert TO a dynamic disk and retain your data, but not vice versa, vice versa requires nuking everything.)

I haven't found a free piece of software that says it can do it and retain your data either, though i did find a guide for manually doing it yourself with a HDD sector editor program that lets you edit individual sectors on a HDD. That process could do it and retain your data but I could not find any instructions on how to do it for a multi-partitioned HDD.

Anyways my point is I have the same error and I can not convert back to a basic disk because it will erase my data in the process! Any new thoughts or ideas on how to resolve it?

Also the reason I converted my disks to Dynamic Disks is because it lets me better manage my partitions via the partition management software included with Windows 7. I use the partition management software included with Windows now because I'm completely clueless about partition software these days, last piece of partition software I used that was fantastic in every way was Partition Magic and Norton's bought out the company behind it and halted development on that so yeah, **** you Nortons. (Also Nortons software started becoming rubbish starting with there 2004 or 2003 product suite, around the time Norton left the company iirc. Before they tried supporting NT Windows everything about there software was great.)

The error makes no sense because Windows 7 can be installed on to a dynamic disk perfectly fine as can XP Pro and presumably various Vista editions.

I have found a way to convert your disk to basic easily. Look up "MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional Edition". It is a paid program, but if your morals are questionable you can get it for free. There is an option to convert your disk to basic which I used! All it took was a restart, and during the restart it did it.

Does it support multi partition disks?

Edit: Whoa, that UI looks pretty much like Partition Magic and as the name of the product suggests, it seems to be another company taking up the torch and continuing development on basically the same thing.

Edit 2: Tested the Professional Edition and when trying the conversion process it refuses to work on multi-partition dynamic disks.

Well multi-partition dynamic disks isn't unique to any one O/S afaik. Windows 7 supports such as well and in fact I am indeed using Windows 7 x64.

Multi-partitioned Basic disks, yeah. Multi-partition Dynamic disks however, no.

then I get the question wrong.

I had a Raid5 (6 ssd's + Adaptec Raid card) and I had several partitions. I never work with only one partition.
But since Dynamic partitions slowed me down a bit, I do not longer work like that.

So, What do I understand faultly?

Jeff

I add here, Dynamic disks=called volumes.

Hi Stefelz,

why would you use a dynamic disk? You do not need this.

Hi there
OK not for installing the OS - but DYNAMIC DISKS are very useful for creating SPANNED VOLUMES. For example say you have 3 X 750 GB HDD's you can "Span" these so windows treats this as "One logical disk" of 2.25 TB (3 X 750 GB). This can be useful for large multi media data bases (Music / video etc) when most software operates in FOLDERS (Directories) and ithe folder size is limited to the space left on ONE volume.

Tip though - when creating spanned volumes with a large amount of total space backup by DIRECTORIES rather than backing up the whole spanned volume and store user data there. I usually use Video and audio files on the large spanned volumes.

Cheers
jimbo

True Jimbo,

but then you get the same problem as with Raid0 right?

When 1 drive failes, bye bye Logical disk.

Then i still prefer to buy a 2 or 3 gb drive and not use Dynamic discs.

My feeling is that one day you will regret this.

Hi there
just using what I have --seems a shame to waste them especially for data that doesn't change much such as Music and video --and if you have a reasonable backup strategy there's no problem.
