Screen fades in steps between apps/desktop/start screen

I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

(edit...vimeo was taking forever to process)

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop. Has anyone seen this effect, and if so is there some registry key somewhere that is needed to fix it?

TIA

I know you have turned off adaptive brightness and it's sensor...but that looks to me like it's actually still running in the hardware.

I would tend to agree, though it doesn't actually affect the overall brightness based on the room conditions. That's why I'm curious where MS has hidden all the registry keys where these settings are actually controlled.

It sure as heck seems like it is still running, it's visually noticeable even in the video.

Are you running an "Automatic" taskbar and desktop colour? That might cause the brightness to change when the system changes desktops and the colour adapts. But I can't tell from that video if you are running a slideshow of wallpapers. With my system, when it changes colours there is a little but of a change in brightness but not as much as I see in the video.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Static wallpaper for me.

Automatic task bar and desktop color? I'm not familiar with those options .. I'll track that down and see what I can find!!

Ok, that was the only other thing that could affect brightness that I can think of. Sounds like your Ambient Light Sensor or whatever causes those changes is just stuck in the "on" position.

Does it brighten up when you move the mouse? Cos I have a crappy tablet that when I set it to blank out after 15 seconds, I get the same effect. But that is Droid, not Windows 8. You have your power options set to blank the screen in 1 minute or some other relatively short time?

Ah, well you should keep it enabled for battery use only, it should stop when plugged in, those settings really do give you more battery life. You just have to deal with how they act, my crap droid tablet is the same thing, it dims if not being used.

You should be able to control the dimming, so that it is less irritating.
