I own a Lenovo G700, and I have heard that Shift + F2 will get you into the BIOS. It might work if all else fails. You can also call Lenovo support or search around a bit more. But in my case I have to use the hardware OneKey Recovery button to access it.

If you did any Lenovo System updates, it may have changed the UEFI partition, it happened to me with an HP Pavilion laptop. After a UEFI update, I no longer had the Advanced Startup. But I used the

DISM /online /cleanup-image /restore-health

and got it back. Try that, it worked for me- Do it from an administrator command prompt. It takes about 20 minutes, then try Advanced Startup from PC Settings.

So what happened when you removed the hard drive? What was shown on the monitor. Windows 8 with UEFI will pull the OEM Logo from your BIOS and display it on your Windows 8 boot screen above the juggling balls. On a non UEFI system the Windows 8 Logo gets displayed. You won't get that screen with the drive pulled as its a Windows Boot Screen and not the BIOS Boot Logo.

It should be F10, but I don't know what it would be on a new computer, they usually do not remove the F-key access even with UEFI.

The website for the model should have the F key for BIOS, or I would call them up if I were you.

I think I know what this is, did the Lenovo have "Rapid Boot" or some similar thing?

In Laptops from 3 years ago, when you did a Hibernate, it would stick the MB into a different Power-Off state then when you just shut it off, so that it would boot up faster. IN this state, it bypasses the initial BIOS screen, the one with the Logo on it. When that screen is showing, is when you can press the F-Key combo for getting into the BIOS or doing a different boot order.

To GET OUT of that mode, you had to start up the system, and wait until it started resuming, and then you had to press the POWER button for about 10 seconds. This would put the board back into the default power-off state.

I think this new RapidBoot technology uses the same thing, but it puts the system into that state under a Normal Power Off routine, so that there is NO way to get to the F-Keys that are there when Rapid Boot is not turned on.

I understand WHY Windows 8 and 8/1 were designed with that "Advanced Boot" in PC Settings, it is to disable Rapid Boot and allow you to press what keys you need to get into the BIOS.

Without being able to get into Windows to provole that reboot into the regular power-off state, I don't know how to get it into that state, maybe booting and holding the power button for 10 seconds will work for your Lenovo.

It's just something that can be tried, somewhere, somebody has anticipated this problem and there has to be a solution for it.

Most PCs and Laptops have a way to reset the cMos, try opening the back, look for the little battery, remove it and then try to boot a few times, once it goes into the normal non-rapid power off state you should be able to get into the BIOS.

As far as I know Windows 8 does not change any BIOS settings. I'm no expert, but its not something they have ever done in the past. If they were altering settings on the sly I would think it would be all over the Internet. Thes Fast Startup feature can cause problems accessing your BIOS on boot up but it doesn't actually alter any BIOS settings. If you remove the hard drive, regardless of what state it was in, it should now go to the BIOS. You should get a "Insert bootable media and press the space bar" or similar message with the option to enter Setup. Clearly Levono have a BIOS issue. The board replacement is like because if you can't access the BIOS you can't flash it. Or, the bad code is in the area that is updated by a BIOS flash.

I would think, that if you unplugged the power pack, removed the battery, and pressed the power button to drain what's left. Then powered it up again it would be in a normal boot mode and you could access the BIOS. It seems like a lot of work but if I was stuck and couldn't get windows to boot it would be better than removing the hard drive to get BIOS access.

yes,may be you are right i believe it could be RapidBoot technology!! i decided to remove the CMOS but i shouldn't because my laptop is in warranty there is a lenovo sticker on the top of the screw so i can't remove CMOS battery!!!holding power button for 10 sec or 30 secs i have tried all those i still can't access bios!! only two possibilities we can able to access 1) CMOS battery rest ( may or may not work) 2)BIOS reflashed by by EEPROM writer!!! But.there is some bug with in the UEFI BIOS for the laptop models G580/Z580/Z570. so many users were having this problem!!!
anyhow my laptop has been approved for refund :)
