Hi,
I was getting the error in the picture when I shut down Windows 8 after a session.
It seems to have gone with the latest update but worth observing nonetheless. DSC01863_2.jpg
Thanks.

Look for a hard error at the time things blew up. If you sort in chronological order, then just look for the last big error and ignore the other 500 entries.

I am not sure to what you are referring since the computer didn't actually crash and there are no detectable performance issues.
However, since I am running such a fast processor with so much RAM, issues might not be visible in the way I am use to them manifesting (i.e. slow downs etc.)
The fact that there was an error message, which was supressed during half a dozen shutdowns, then only the final message before the update requiring any action on my part, perhaps indicates it was a minor issue. I wanted to be sure, hence my post.
Can someone help me identify from the screen shots which might be the message that generated the error report?

Ok. I really read the error dialog for the first time. It's not "error code 0x00000000" it's an access violation because something tried to write to memory address 0x00000000. That's the bottom of memory where the OS keeps its structures. In the old Dos days that's how PCs locked up. The OS could no longer function because it had been overwritten. Now with memory protection those are caught and the program terminated.

Something tried to write using a 0 memory address. Usually that means a program asked for memory and didn't check if it got any from the OS(a return value of 0 indicating failure.)

Basic sleuthing would be shut down the system removing one program at a time until the error goes away, or look through the logs for "write to address 0" or "access violation" etc..

Screen shots are not logs. They can't be scrolled. If you look yourself you may see the error. Use editor search like find "access violation" etc..

Thanks MilesAhead. However as I said The error has gone away since the latest Windows 8 Microsoft update. I probably shouldn't worry, but was merely being cautious.
There seem to be about a dozen errors every time I switch on- Does anyone know if that is normal with Windows 8?

If that's so then one of the updates likely fixed a bad module or library.

You say using present tense that you get errors. Do you mean were getting errors or are still getting errors? Are these only in the logs or are you getting notifications(if you are still getting errors now I mean?)

If the error notices have gone then generally I adhere to "If it ain't broke don't fix it." Over tinkering can be a system killer.
