I have a Windows 8 system and I am into video recording and burning onto dvd-r disc. My question is this: Should I install --> "K-Lite Codec Pack 10.15 (Full)" or "Windows 8 Codec Pack 2.0.1"

Thank you so very much and any reply and help is greatly appreciated.

What format are you recording to? It is pretty easy nowadays to get players and encoders that use self-contained libraries instead of relying on codec packs.

I assume you are converting a source format video to standard DVD video and burning a DVD5? In such a case the selection of encoders would vary with the input format. Many encoders can output standard DVD video. But they are not all equal handling the various input formats.

None, install Media Player Classic Home Cinema or VLC Player and call it a day.

One of the best free video encoders for dvd compliant output is HCEnc

To get started you may want to try a Gui wrapper program. Many people like AVStoDVD

HCEnc comes with its own Gui. Assuming you don't need subtitle support, that makes things a bit easier. You can use the Gui and bitrate calculators to enter values directly. After some runs with AVStoDVD you may want to take control. I recommend becoming familiar with AviSynth since it is free and very powerful. Many free tools use it. There are myriad filters for it. But many like the output of AVStoDVD in automatic mode.

Naturally if you can go with DVD9 output you'll have higher bit rates to work with. But for video shorts you won't need to be concerned. Try a couple of AVStoDVD runs to see what you think. The author has a support thread on VideoHelp.com - Forum, Guides, Tools and hardware lists. A search on the encoder name there will pull it up.

You don't really need either of them, just download VLC media player and MPC-HC Home Theatre, both of whch have all of those codecs installed by default.

The only reason to use those codec packs is for Windows Media Player, but since WMP has been stripped of all usable features like DVD playing and burning, just dont bother.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Also, when you are burning DVD content, you dont need any of those codecs, use IMGburn and drag the Video_TS folder into the burning window.

If you are editing video, then the editing software will have the codecs, so you don't want to download those packs, some of them have virii added to them.
