Hello everyone.

My Windows 8.1 64 bit has been freezing up the login screen. Right when it signs me up to my live account instead of having the icon spin it stops and nothing but restarting does anything. I have not ran through the automatic repair options, just never seemed to help in the past. I also found this online:

Windows 8.1 Stuck on login screen [Solved] - Login - Windows 8

Never had this option: [FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Nimbus Sans L, arial, sans-serif]Intel xHCI mode: Disabled so couldn't follow the instructions perfectly.

Seems to be usb related. All my devices are updated and the computer has booted right up with all removed. Otherwise sometimes it boots right in, usually 2-3 restarts and I'm on. Once on everything is perfect!

Helpful Info:

Windows 8.1 Pro
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth 990 FX R2.0
CPU: AMD 1090t black edition
Boots to Samsun SSD

Hi yooper, Welcome to Eight forums.

When you get to the sign in window press and hold the shift key then click power button and select restart. You should now see the Advanced Start-up Options menu screen. From the troubleshoot tile try advanced options then system restore. If you get back to normal then the first thing to do is create a restore to factory medium. Used to be a set of DVDs but now also allows a backup to a flash drive. I would do both if allowed.

Thanks! The only issue is there hasn't really been a normal. I believe this started almost immediately... I do have an update though and that is the USB cords can be plugged in, it will still freeze.

Also I ran system repair multiple times and nothing.

I tried to hold down the shift key and press the on/off button on the keyboard, and all that happened was the computer turned off.

My computer guru suggested I press F8 a million times a second when restarting. Didn't seem to do much good, but then I repeatedly pressed F8 while pressing the shut down button on the screen. That got me into the Advanced Options screen.

I'm currently doing a system restore. I installed an update to the Toshiba Sevice Station this morning, and that's when my startup profile disappeared.

Success!

I had to go back to an older system restore, but everything is working OK again!
Thanks for the clue about shift-power button; it worked like a charm when I did the 2nd system restore.

Hi everyone,

I have just joined this forum as I am having a few issues, one of which is freezing at the log in screen and also explorer freezing once I have logged in.

To begin with I had to repeatedly restart until I had a successful log in.

I have found a solution which seems to work for me.

I changed the account type to a local account, which initially didn't work. I then removed the password to the account so that no password is required on start up, so now it boots directly to desktop/start screen.

Now on start up there doesn't seem to be any issues. I'm not exactly sure why this has solved the problem, maybe someone will be able to explain, if so I would be very grateful to know. Granted having no password its not idea.

Also I am using an OCZ Agility 3 SSD.

Thanks
Simon

Hi,
it seems strange that I have your same problem and same motherboard (ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0). I updated everything (including BIOS) and still getting this problem.

Any idea?
