Windows 8.1 Shut Down and Sleep Issues

Hey there,

I've recently got myself a new ASUS N550JV laptop and one of the first things I did after downloading a few programs was update to Windows 8.1. Shortly after this I noticed that when shutting the computer down or restarting, it would take about 5 minutes before it would finally power off. For most of the five minutes only a black screen can be seen but the computer is definitely still running. The hard drive seems to power off and then power up again multiple times during the five minutes as well.

Another problem, which I believe is related, is that I can't put the computer to sleep without it shutting down. When asking the computer to go to sleep, it's screen will quickly become black and it will enter one of these long shut down episodes. All the settings in the power options menus are set to sleep when the lid is closed, power button pressed etc.

I seem to have isolated the problem to the Windows 8.1 update. After a few days of these problems I decided to do a 'system refresh' and after that the computer was back to its normal sleeping and fast booting state. I then did not install any other programs (apart from the asus bloatware that had installed during the refresh) at all before updating to Windows 8.1 and as soon as I did the shut down and sleeping problems came back.

So, something about the Windows 8.1 update is causing things to not operate properly.

I have tried a clean boot and this seemed to allow me to sleep. But this has since turned out to be quite erratic - sometimes it will sleep properly and other times it won't after a clean boot. It has not improved shut down times.

Any help or ideas of things to try would be greatly appreciated!

Same issue...

Have you had any luck with this? I have exactly the same laptop, and I have encountered exactly the same issue as you, so I'm looking forward to hearing that the Windows 8.1 update sleep/shutdown issue has been addressed somehow.

Yes!

This is what I did:
1) I ran a 'energy report' by typing "powercfg -energy" into the admin command prompt.
2) This showed that there was a device/driver that was requesting that the computer didn't enter sleep mode. This driver was "srvnet" under the directory: \FileSystem\srvnet
3) By typing "powercfg -requestsoverride driver \FileSystem\srvnet system" into the command prompt, the request to prevent sleep was overridden and everything was better.

Other people have suggested that their issues were caused by the Qualcomm Bluetooth drivers. Two people I spoke to on another forum updated their Qualcomm drivers to version 8.0.1.306 and their problems were fixed.
I hope this helps.

Awesome, thanks! I will try it out. Saw the discussion here as well:

I am not a Windows 8 user (yet) but I wanted to say thank you for the Qualcomm tip. It solved the sleep/shutdown problems of my daughter's Asus N750JV. I would never have guessed this could be the cause!
