Hey I just got a brand new Dell Inspiron with Windows 8 (got it yesterday). In the power options I have the settings set to sleep when closing the lid of the laptop, but the computer seems to always turn off. When I open the lid, my computer is completely off and I have to press the power button to turn it back on and wait for windows to reload.

This is not a battery problem as it happens even when plugged in.
I have also tried using the command prompt "powercfg /hibernate on" but it hasn't fixed anything.

How can I fix this problem? This is probably one of the most frustrating thing to happen.

hinbernat would have been on by default, which could be the cause of your problem. Try powercfg -h off

Thanks Dacehc. I tried turning off the hibernate but still get the same problem. One thing I did forget to mentioned in my original post is that when I close the lid, the front LED light that indicates if the computer is on flashes for about 15 seconds, before turning off. If I reopen my lid during those 15 seconds, my computer resumes instantly (faster than sleep mode on my last computer). But after those 15 seconds, the computer is off completely.

It's probably "fast Boot" being turned on, how long does it take to start back up after this? It should be in Hibernation and should come back up very fast - If it is fast, then I would not mess with it, sounds like a gift horse. It may be that fast Boot takes precedence over sleep modes. I bought an Asus for a friend and it did the same thing, seemed i could not make it sleep closing the lod. But since it booted back on in about 1 and a half seconds, I left it alone.

I wish it was that fast. It's actually more like a full minute. The Dell logo comes on, with the Windows 8 loading circle under it. Then I see my username with the loading circle next to it, and finally the start menu. But all applications and programs that were left open prior to closing the screen are completely closed, and the information isnt saved (as far as i can tell).

Doing a fresh shutdown and power on is actually twice as fast as the process mentioned above.

Have you gone to the Dell site and made sure all drivers are up to date? Especially any chipset or ACPI related.

I'm running the tests on Dell Support right now, so far nothing wrong has been detected. I ordered two exact same laptops, the second one works perfectly, closing lid and opening back up gives me a perfect, instant sleep and awakening. This one however has this issue. Not only that but it omits a weird clicking sound from the cd area (could be something else than the cd drive though). Dell was a real pain to deal with when ordering the laptops (overcharging me and having to fight for two weeks to get a refund), so im not looking forward to have to argue with them over the phone about one of these two being defective.

What happens when you set the power button to put in sleep mode? Does it act the same way?

Well, since you're thinking of sending it back anyway, nothing to lose by doing a system reset. See if anything changes.

Also, shouldn't have to break any seals to pop out the DVD drive and see if it makes a difference.

Then it is not a Hibernation. Popeye is right, check for Windows 8.1 drivers, for a machine that originally had 8 on it. When these PCs were made, they worked great under 8. Now, 8,1 can't be run on some of them, no drivers yet.

Might depend on which model exactly, you have. There are quite a few.

Have you looked here and selected your model and tabbed the drivers. Several of the latest models have a full selection for Windows 8.

Support | Dell US

Through my business, I have several Dells, including an Inspiron. To date, I have had no problems with installing odd components in compatibility mode. But I doubt that drivers are the problem.
I do think the noises you here from the DVD on booting, may be a red herring. The ones I have employ the "Optiarc", fwiw. The machine has a look at this during the boot sequence and (mine, anyway) do click a bit during this process.

Best advice , I suggest, so far in this thread, is to take it back for a replacement. Don't waste time messing with a new machine.

Just spoke to my son, who is a Dell service engineer. He says it could be other problems. Unlikely but possibly a motherboard replacement is required. But his guess is it is a physical problem with the micro switch on the lid. Take it back.

Hey Dave! Thanks so much for this info. I managed to argue with Dell enough for them to send me an exchange. I have 2 of the same laptops so its hard for me to believe that one is not defective.
