All apps gone from laptop with windows 8

I have a lenovo twist thinkpad with windows 8 on it but recently it's been showing a message with a blue screen that says Kernel inpage data error and would just reboot the computer. But today it showed the message and when it came back on everything was gone even the apps. There is nothing on the desktop but the recycle bin. Help please i can't lose my work.

I would

1) Clean the HD Drive, using Step one in this tutorial:

2) Use last System back up image you made to restore the OS.

You are probably in a "Temporary Profile"- And that is a whole new worm can, in that you CANNOT use a restore point, which may be the solution - You can only implement it from a Windows 8/x install Disk.

For the first part of this, you need to do a full Hard Disk Surface Scan (if you have a Solid State Drive, you cannot do this)

To do a full disk surface scan, download Hiren's Boot CD from my link below, Burn it and Boot to it. Go into "Dos Programs" once it boots. Since your system is Lenovo, look for Hitachi Drive scanner. If your HDD is not Hitachi you will have to find out what you have, it's usually in your BIOS which on Lenovo I believe is F2 at boot. Also try GWscan. Open the scanning program and do the short tests, if there is anything wrong, then you will have to do the full test. After you do a full drive scan, then you need to do a regular CHKDSK, if yo have an install disk you can use Command Prompt to do that.

If the disk had read element failure, then that could have caused the Blue Screens and ultimately the new problem with "No Apps" - In certain conditions, Windows will load a "Temporary Profile" and you basically have to rebuild your User Account folder. With the Temp Profile loaded, none of your User-Specific apps will be there. To find out if you are actually in a Temp Profile, open Users on your Hard Drive, and look for a "User" folder named "Temp" - If it is there, then proceed to the next link.
