3 Mins To Restart!

Hi, first post - if in the wrong section sorry.

I updated my Dell XPS 15 to win8.1 via store and got there in the end, but for the life of me I cannot solve this restart issue and I have googled it, this is my last ditch attempt.

I think it takes a minute to shutdown, it sleeps and resumes ok when I close the lid. But when I click restart it goes thru the motions, screen goes black, lights on the keyboard go off after a minute and at about 2 mins 40 it restarts, getting me back into windows again around 3 mins total.

Sure, I can just hold the power button down and do it ghetto style but I'd rather like to know why and if possible, to fix it. I'm not running any weird software or anything I can think of that would cause the problem, it only happened after the update.

Thanks in advance.

saves time in the long run

Done. Just noticing too, any reason why there's a yellow triangle checkmark beside 'bluetooth audio device' which dissapears whenever I remove the iphone. Think the same happened with my nexus 4 too. I did email Killer / Bigfoot about it and sent them a report log from the wireless card but haven't heard anything back.

See this tutorial especially the part about Enable Boot Logging. If the system is timing out waiting for drivers to load or some other issue, you may get a clue there.

That boot log tells me nothing, mainly because I wouldn't know if something was problematic by looking at that.

Is that relevant to it shutting down and then getting back to restarting tho, because it'll boot as quick as it always did. The problem is it taking 2 min 40 from windows to post.

Done. Just noticing too, any reason why there's a yellow triangle checkmark beside 'bluetooth audio device' which dissapears whenever I remove the iphone. Think the same happened with my nexus 4 too. Shut Off BlueTooth when you are plugging your iPhone in directly. Or, use the Bluetooth specifically to connect. You will have to pair the phone to the PC, once you do that the exclamation mark will go away.

Thanks for the reply.

I gave that a go, it detected the phone I paired it, it said connected and then about 5 seconds later says' not connected' and still has the yellow triangle over 'bluetooth audio device'

Once you pair your PC to the iPhone, it will copy all of the drivers it needs. You gotta start that through "Devices and Printers" just Add New Device, choose Bluetooth, and "Discover New Device" make sure the iPhone is in Discover Mode as well.

Or, just shut off your Bluetooth on the phone, it is draining your battery like mady with it on. You should only have it turned on while using it while driving.

Sometimes, it is just Stubborn. you gotta keep trying.

Also I am not familiar with iOS 7, only 6.1.2, but they will not find each other unless both devices are in Discover mode.

Make sure the PC you are pairing is connected to the net while this is happening, that's another thing.

Ive connected to Ta Toshiba and an HP, apple should download the BT drivers once it locks in.

I gave all that a go removing the device and adding it thru printers and devices as I don't use the metro UI. I only hooked it up to see why it was giving me this checkmark over audio device. Seems I can't resolve it regardless of what way I do it.

Yeah, I know about the battery. It's bad enough without it!

iPhone 3G, 4, 4S, 5/C/S?

iPhone 4S should detect right away.

Once it connects you should get a whole new interface in "Devices" for the phone, you click on it, and the iPhone numpad will pop up, and it should copy all of your contacts over.

Oh Yah, try removing the device completely before trying to pair it again.

If it wont connect, just shut off the iPhone BT and then remove the Device from the PC.

iPhone 3G, 4, 4S, 5/C/S?

iPhone 4S should detect right away.

Once it connects you should get a whole new interface in "Devices" for the phone, you click on it, and the iPhone numpad will pop up, and it should copy all of your contacts over.

4S - It's not that they don't see each other or even pair, they just don't stay connected for more than 10 seconds. The restart thing is a bit of a mystery. I suspect it's one of the graphics drivers but I'm not sure if there's actually anything I can do. I already had to change the intel HD4000 driver to an earlier version as the brightness control wouldn't work. It affects a lot of different brands tho, not just the Dell.

It's not just the phone, there are audio devices and Video devices that have to download from Apple. As a last Ditch, you could right click on the Device in Device Manager and see if you can download new drivers for it.

Are you Jailbroken, or are you running iOS7? There are a number of BT helper apps you can download from cYdia.

I WIsh I had BT on one of my PCs, so I can go through the process and try to find out why it is kicking you off. It should be an Automatic Paring.

Ok, I just looked this up, it seems liek this is a huge problem with Windows 8. I had previously connected to Windows 7, so I was assuming that it was just as easy with Windows 8 - It's not:

The bluetooth devices are offline in Windows 8. - Microsoft Community

It all has to do with which Bluetooth Drivers are installed, and it's not just iPhone, it's all BT devices. Check the Maker of your PC/Laptop and see if there is an update for the BT drivers.

I found this too:

iPhone Bluetooth Services & Windows 8 - Spiceworks

Ok Ok, lets not have posturing in here.

I apologize for my colleague here, he just hasn't had experience with iPhones and 8. I've had experience with iPhone, just not in 8, but this is a Widespread Problem. You will have to remove all vestiges of the BT from Device Manager, if it asks choose "Remove Driver Files", the BT Driver files should be in 8 already, but sometimes BT acts up, it is either your Phone or your PC - Try rebooting the iPhone- Hold the Home and Sleep buttons at the same time until it goes dark, then let it reboot. Turn on BT, and then try again.
