Dear All,

I have a query wrt adding of a program to Win 8 startup.

I went to %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
and copied the shortcut of the prog there, still it does not show up in my system tray when I start my Win 8.
What might went wrong?
Thanks,
Troy.

You could use task scheduler to make a program open on startup.

Check the shortcut thats in there manually, make sure it is viable, sometimes a shortcut of a shortcut won't work.

Also, install Classic Chell and use that to find the Startup Folder, you may not have put the shortcut into into the right one, the one that the system uses should be in the "Program Data" folder, not the Appdata folder. Under Microsoft/Windows/Start Menu.

Ok, I just checked this system, its

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5180-startup-items-manage-windows-8-a.html

C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

But if you are sticking it there and it aint working, try this location:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Hello Troy,

Does this program use "Run as administrator" to run elevated?

If so, then that is why it will not run at startup. By default, Windows will not run elevated programs at startup for security reasons. If this is the case, then you could use the workaround in the tutorial below to create an elevated shortcut of the program, and place the elevated shortcut in the Startup folder to have it run elevated at startup without an UAC prompt.

Elevated Program Shortcut without UAC Prompt - Create - Windows 7 Help Forums

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

The first question that comes to my mind: Is the program running, and just not appearing in the tray? That may be the case.

I'm assuming you don't have the tray icon for that program hidden, either totally hidden or in the "Show hidden icons" area.

After I updated to Win8.1, I started having lots of problems with tray icons not showing, even though the respective programs were running. I still have not fully solved this problem.

Whatever the name of the program is (from the shortcut properties), look for it in Task Manager, to see if it's running after you restart.
