Solved Search feature in 8.1

I am surprised at how fast the search feature is in 8.1. As I understand, it will only search files that it has indexed. But I have some files that have been indexed but it still can't find one of which is outlook.pst. The path of the file is C:\Users\Frank\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. I do know that the folder Users is being indexed. So isn't the subfolders supposed to be indexed too? I realize that AppData is by default hidden. But I always to into Folder Options and un-hide everything. Is it possible that the reason it is not being found is because by default it is supposed to be a hidden file?

That appears to be the case with the Metro search but that does not apply to an Exlporer search. So if you open explorer, and highlight your C drive (for example), and then input your search criteria, it should find the file you are looking for like so:

AppData is not indexed by default. You need to add in the parts of it you want manually. Go to indexing options, click on modify to get the "Indexed Locations" box. From there expand AppData and add the parts you want. I did with Windows Live Mail and it works fine - search gets my emails. Don't add all of AppData as you don't want "...AppData/Local/Temp" indexed for sure.

I wish I could agree that windows 8.1 search is fast, but it isn't.

On another thread someone recommended Everything Search which is fast.

This is one of the blurry fonts that make Windows 8 and Internet Explorer so difficult to read for some users, and is not one of the standard fonts offered on this forum. Can any of the other readers spot the blurry problem?

The problem (from Everything FAQ) is this - you would only find the PST not mails or contents.

No, "Everything" does not search file contents, only file and folder names.

As for speed - it works excellently me. I've no idea why it doesn't for others unfortunately except to say it took a day or so to build the index.
