Unwanted sleep when laptop is closed

Hey hey, so the problem is i want to leave my laptop running when doing renders that take hours on end. I've disabled the sleep mode in every way that I know how to (see screen shots). When the lid is open it doesn't go to sleep, but when it's closed after about minutes it goes into sleep mode (all fans off etc).

This never happened with windows 7 and i've triesd programs like insomnia which haven't helped at all. Id really love to get to the bottom of this, otherwise I might have to reluctantly revert to windows 7 :(

Anyone offering ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers

Hi safety1g,

FYI, I have seen this behavior before on a few Sony Vaio models, and each time it was referred back to Sony support, where they said the option to "change what the lid does when closed" is/was not supported in their power management scheme and there was no workaround for this issue. So, just consider this an FYI at this point; however, if you can't get your issue resolved quicky, I would spend 10 minutes on the phone with your laptop's manufacturing support group to see if they can confirm a similar issue.

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply, my laptop is an ASUS. I did stumble across that about the sony laptops. (something about the fans being obstructed by the lid). My fan isnt obstructed by the lid so hopefully this isn't the problem. I didn't have any issues with windows 7, so i can only assume it's a bug with windows 8, or a seeting that's being overridden somewhere along the line, but i seem to have exhausted all avenues and was hoping someone might be able to shed a bit of light. Maybe someone has had a similar issue or knows windows 8 inside out!

Have you updated to the latest BIOS? Does ASUS state that you laptop (whatever that is) supports Windows 8? Anyway, if you really want to explore this issue more here, you'll need to provide your system specs.
Good luck.

Its usually the advanced setting that says "Power Buttons and LID" - I've set up about a dozen ASUS laptops, about half of them with Windows 8 and they all were able to close the lid without shutting down.

See, you set it under "Sleep" and that will have no effect on the Lid.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I did have it set here also, just not in the previous screen shot. I've just updated my bios to the most recent and still the problem persists :/ any other ideas? I'm on a Asus k53e with a 250gb samsung SSD. and 4 gb of ram, if that's any use to anyone..

EDIT: it seems strange to me that it takes 2 minutes or so for it to go to sleep, almost as if there is another timer somewhere. It's not immediately when the lid is closed, just that it only happens when the lid is closed.

If you are concerned about wake timers, this input message will reveal all that are active:

That's the exact Asus model number I set up last.

Good idea with searching for active Wake Timers.

But since you installed an SSD, did it also have any management software? Check that and see if it stuck some kind of sleep timer in to the system.

Also since the shut down occurs two minutes AFTER the lid is closed, then yo have the power buttons and Lid setting correct. You do have some other sleep timer set somewhere else, remember there are settings for On Battery and Plugged in, something may have been set you overlooked.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, but I'm still not having any luck. I've scowled through every possible setting to make sure both sleep and hibernate are both disabled. There's definitely no software for the ssd, and "There are no active wake timers in the system." I really am stumped!?

You still have that option to call ASUS support and ask for their take on your entire issue.

Yeh I will give that a try, but I suspect that will be a long process. It's looking like i'll be reverting back to windows 7 in the meantime.
