Run shortcuts that are under the start menu

I've installed some software that runs on the Desktop. On Windows earlier than 8, it installs some shortcuts in its part of the start menu that run various configuration programs. When you want to reconfigure the software you click the start menu, find the entry/folder for the software then click the shortcut for the required configuration program.

But these shortcuts do not actually run an exe file. Looking at their properties, their targets are actually of the form (for example):

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW

and the shortcut name is simply "VFW configuration".

On Windows 8 of course there is no start menu. So what is the easiest way I can run these shortcuts in Windows 8 ?

You can install a Start Menu replacement, Strardock Start8 is 5 bucks, Windows Classic Shell is free:

Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements

You could probably create a shortcut for this on the Desktop, then pin it to the Taskbar - If you don't want to install the 3rd party software. You can add the switches like so, I;m not quire sure what to do about the "" you can always experiment with it, or alter the shortcut after it is on the desktop:

In Windows 8, Right click inside the Start screen and at the bottom right select All Apps and the All Apps screen should list your shortcuts. In Windows 8.1 Start screen on the left bottom is a down arrow that will take you to All Apps.

She can't do that, there are switches in the command line.

Here, just take this text, and paste it into a New Shortcut window:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW

It will create a shortcut on the desktop, then you can pin it to the Taskbar or Start Screen.

You can check the properties like so:

The command works, I don't have that module, but it WILL bring it up on your system, on my system there is no Syswow64 folder, 32 bit only.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I could only find out all of the configuration shortcuts and what their targets were because I was able to find them so easily in the Windows 7 start menu. If I had only had Windows 8 then I don't think I could have found any of this out at all.

Without using any third party software, is there a simple way to show the contents of the folder in the start menu maybe in windows explorer, so that I could see all of the shortcuts and just double-click whichever one I wanted whenever (and not have to bother about the complicated target string) ?

Hello, tiresias. Welcome to Windows EightForums.

You can right click on any folder to get the context menu. Choose "Pin to Start". You will find the tile added the end of your Start Screen.

You may add this as well for files: www.eightforums.com/showthread.php?t=15624

You can look in ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows/Start Menu/Programs and see if that is what you want. ProgramData is normally hidden.

Yah, it is, from there you can just drag the shortcut that was already made onto the desktop and then to the taskbar or Start Screen.
