Where and What is an ISO of Win 8 Win Freeze on Re - Boot

Hi I have a few questions it’s about Booting up and Creating a Boot -able Flash Drive (Sans-disc 16 Gig Fat32)
I had an issue this morning the PC is only 3 month’ old a Dell Inspiron 660.
I have noticed a couple of times in the morning’s Maybe when its trying to install Updates ) or MC Vee runs’ that it does some funny things. This morning the computer “Locked up” and I had to ‘Re Start it but it would not go past the Black Screed Dell Logo. I pushed all the buttons Windows, F2, F8, F10, for Safe Mode but nothing and I haven't got a Win8 Disc. Win8 was Pre-installed? I have the Product Key but That's another Problem as well.
It took me all day to manage to start the PC and I am not game to turn it off until we can see whats up. I have since Run MWMbs and McVee on Scan’ nothing’ so I decided to create a ‘Boot-able USB flash drive’ but the problem is how and where do I download the Windows 8 ISO and do I download Windows 8.1 or just 8?

I found MS win 8 update site and tried to Download the Win 8 64 version I don’t know if it was the ISO but when I went to add my Windows Product Key it said Dasha will log in Auto (see JPEG) Attach for that and when I tried to clear the ‘box’ and use my product key’ it would not accept my Product Key that I entered??

So I need some info about the Lock up and No Boot if I can please?

1 ) Do I update My PC and the The Re-Boot able USB stick with Windows 8.1
or Just 8

2) Where do I find an ISO of win8 to download to save and install using The Rufus App what doe it look like how do I download it cheers Dasha

PC is 3 month old and a Dell Inspiron 660, Win8, I have MWMB’s and Mc Vee anti Scheduled weekly CCleaner Weekly

I think you mean an ISO (instead of ICO). You can download the Win 8.1 ISO by following this procedure:

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-upgrade-iso-download-create.html

Follow the tip at the end of the tutorial for instructions on how to get that ISO onto a USB drive or DVD.

Once done, you will need to do a clean install using a special key for the 8.1 installation. This key works for Windows 8.1 Pro (see post #16):

http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/33164-how-download-windows-8-1-iso-2.html

Now, after you have successfully done a clean install, you must now use your Windows 8 Pro key to activate the installation as a legitimate upgrade to 8.1 Pro:

Hope all this detail helps you. Good luck.

Dasha, you might want to edit your screen shot and black out you Product code. If that is your product code you don't want the whole world knowing it. ;)
If you are trying to download the ISO via http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-upgrade-iso-download-create.html , I've heard that OEM keys will not work. If you retrieved your embedded code from your BIOS it will not work for that download. You have to enter a Retail Key to actually download the setup files and create the ISO. Windows 8 keys won't work for installation either but you can activate with your 8 code. Microsoft, for some reason, are making it tough for anybody with an OEM install of 8 to actually get an ISO.

Thanks for that reminder. Sometimes I just get caught in the moment. So are you saying my suggestion will not work because that is exactly how I did my 8.1 clean install? Once again but being brief this time:

Downloaded Windows 8,.1 ISO
Burned to USB and DVD
Started install.
Was prompted for a key.
Used the generic key for the downloaded Win 8.1 to start the installation.
Installation completed.
Clicked the activate Windows link.
This time, entered my Win 8.0 Pro key.
Activation completed.

Again, thanks for that tip.

I was referring to Dasha's post. There is a product key shown in the second image posted.

From what I've read in the other thread, when doing the actual download, if you enter an OEM key its rejected. The embedded OEM keys won't let you download the install files to make the ISO. Only retail keys are excepted. Now as far as actually installing 8.1, I think you can use an OEM key. I'd have to read though the whole thread again to be sure. Retail Windows 8 keys will work the way you mentioned though. Install with the generic Windows 8.1 install key and then activate with your Windows 8 key. I've done that on my desktop doing a clean install of 8.1 RTM.

No Problem, I didn't want to quote it as that would have copied the screen shot with the product code in it. As far as I know the Product ID shown on the system page can't be used to figure out your actual product code. A lot of people blank it out anyway. All it will tell you is if your installed OS is OEM or Retail and if its VL or not. Stuff like that. In the old days of Windows XP and earlier it would actually be your product code. At some pint Microsoft figured out that that probably wasn't a good idea and changed it.

If the Win8 Product Key I have is no good what can I do

Hi again:huh: I'm sorry guys, I am very confused about all this. Maybe I should complain to Dell? The Windows 8 Product Key was obtained by using Belarc Ad-visor. I cannot find any other Key.

So I don't know what to do now" how can MS refuse to accept my Win8 Product Key, just because it was installed on the Computer by Dell? I still paid for it. I have the Product Key :(

I am too afraid to proceed either way. If I install the Win 8.1 upgrade' and try and use my Win8 Product key just to activate it' like you suggest" what will happen if it rejects it??
Is it illegal to male a Backup Re-bootable USB drive?

Can you go through what you think I should do" step by step - in little steps please?
Also where do I find Post #16 Cheers and thanks to all of you Dasha

Hi Dasha,

Since you are in a special situation with an OEM product, I can't really guide you but alphanumeric seems to know more about this method, so maybe he (or someone else) can help you with your specific setup.
Good luck.

PS - Have you investigated the Dell website for a "how to upgrade to Win 8.1 tutorial" because that might fill in the missing pieces relative to your OEM product key.

Well here's the deal as I see it.
Official unmodified Microsoft Windows 8.0 install media will read and use your Windows 8.0 embedded key during installation.
Official unmodified Microsoft Windows 8.1 install media won't use your Windows 8.0 embedded key during installation. It will only accept a Windows 8.1 key for installation.
There are leaked Windows 8.1 install keys you can use to install but they will not let you activate. You can use a Windows 8.0 key to activate 8.1. I do believe those keys can be OEM or Retail.
Those that don't have install media have been using this work around to get it. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-upgrade-iso-download-create.html
I believe you tried that and found it wouldn't accept your key. That is because Microsoft for some reason blocked OEM keys, only Retail keys work for the download part.
I think you can activate with an OEM key, you just can't download with it. I'll have to do some rereading of some threads to confirm that. There was a lengthy thread when the RTM was leaked and I'm almost positive people activated with OEM keys for that release. It isn't going to matter all that much if you can't download the ISO though.

I thought I would post this as an a "Attachment" it's a url to an article about trying to Upgrade to Win8.1 using your Win 8 Product Key (don't) Win8 OEM product Key being not suitable to Upgrade to Win8.1 ? This is a real problem as nobody seems to know a way around it? I feel that Legally everybody with a Retail Version of Win8 OR an OEM Version should be able to use their Win8 Product Key to update to Win8.1' I have have Paid for it once and Win8.1 IS an Update of Win8? Maybe someone can find out more and pass it on:huh::think:

As far as I know you are not blocked from updating to 8.1 though the Windows Store. Your just blocked from downloading the update/ISO via the web link work around. Technically Microsoft is not responsible for tech support for OEM versions, you go to the OEM, Dell, HP, Acer etc.

An update on the Win 8.1 Update this May help

Good-morning alphanumeric :thumb: Just to update you' I upgraded to 8.1 it took 4 hour's but went seamlessly. I did not have to activate nor enter any 'Product Key' so maybe that JPEG that I sent saying "Dasha will enter Key Automatically" is what happened? OR (I had forgotten to mention) I also have a my "Orig Windows 8 OEM number " It's the only thing I can think of? I entered nothing, once the process started I was just a "Passenger" 3 Boot-up's later and my "Original Windows 8 Microsoft account Password" at the start-up and here I am ready now to do Boot-able Flash USB using the 8.1 ISO.

alphanumeric In the last two links in your last post that one that has all of the Code' is that the Windows 8.1 ISO Cobba? what do I do with that? is that what I put onto the Boot-able Flash USB? If so how? do I copy & save it all to the Desktop> then just "Move to" Drive 'j' (the Re-Boot-able Flash USB) do i have to do anything to 'Arm it" I was gonna just go back to that other Process using Rufus and then Enter the (Changed) Core Windows 8 to Win 8.1 Product Key OR the OEM number I just mentioned? Cheers Dasha:)

If you updated though the Windows Store no product code is needed. It just verifies that your system is activated and legal and then updates what needs to be updated.

The code listed in the first post of that second link is the file names and MD5 hash codes for the leaked ISO files. Its what you use to verify that what you downloaded is original and hasn't been modified or tampered with. Anybody that downloaded an ISO off of say bit-torrent would check the MD5 hash code of their ISO against what it should be.

As far as what you put on a flash drive and how you do it, that depends on how you did your update and what files you saved while doing it.

If you read though those threads I linked too, you'll likely find your answer as to whether your OEM product code can be used to activate 8.1. I do believe it can. Unfortunately though, it can't be used to download the ISO as per the other thread. http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/33164-how-download-windows-8-1-iso.html
